Navagio Beach

Last weekend we made like tourists for a few hours. A childhood friend of my husband and his wife popped over for three days. Where did they come from? South Africa! It wasn’t quite as mad as it sounds as they were in Portugal having a big family reunion and thought as they were over this way they would just pop by and see us.

Okay, it was utter madness and the three days passed in a flash. It was really nice to see them though. I actually met my husband when he was travelling Europe with his friend and we all ended up working on the Greek island of Spetses for two summers. His friend also met his wife there at the same time (there must have been something in the water!).

Anyway, last weekend was hectic. I was lucky enough to have the weekend off work, but my husband didn’t, so we did what we could.

Sunday we picked them up and drove them around Zakynthos to give them a feel for it and stopped at the Navagio beach viewpoint. It had to be done. It’s somewhere we haven’t been in years and certainly never in the summer. Needless to say, it was busy, but how beautiful is that view?

Navagio beach is probably one of the best-known landmarks on the island and you can see why. I was safely stood on a viewing platform when I took this photo, with safety rails up to my armpits!

This photo was taken from a different angle further along the clifftop. All we could hear was the sound of horns as the visiting boats entertained the tourists. The only way to get to the beach is by boat.

Where do you show friends on the island of Zakynthos? The iconic shipwreck beach, of course!

    Debbie when I was in Zakynthos many years ago we went to this location. Unfortunately, there were packs of dogs there and we were hesitant to get out of the car. It certainly is one of the most known locations in beautiful Zakynthos.

      Hi Mary, that was a shame as the view is quite breathtaking. I can't believe my parents haven't seen it either and they've lived here a fair few years. It gives me an excuse to go back up there offseason and photograph the place in winter. Thank you for stopping by. xx

    There are a lot of people on that beach! I can see why though, because what a beautiful place. Could you imagine being the first person to discover it? I wish I had a boat.... and lived on an island :)

      Hi Jen, can you imagine! But maybe, back in the day, people looked at the place differently. Maybe they didn't see a beauty spot, maybe it was a safe cove for the exchange of smuggled goods?... Thank you for popping by. xx

    Lovely pictures!! Do you like to print them? I'm kind of into scrapbooking but sadly I don't get to travel that much. Otherwise I would have an album for every trip!! haha

      Hi Susana, I rarely print photos I've taken, although I often think I will. If I do it's for gifts. Scrapbooking looks like a fun way to preserve memories, but I don't think I'm creative enough to get one looking as I would like. I've seen some really nice ones. Thank you for stopping by. xx

    This brings back memories! We went to Zakynthos many years ago and hired a car and came across this beach just by chance. It was rammed with boats when we took a similar snap, I'd love to see how it looks without them - almost a little eerie I suspect?

      Hi Kate, I've been here over 20 years and Zakynthos has changed so much and got so much busier in that time. I've only ever seen it in winter before now, but this winter I plan to head there with my camera and take a winter shot and compare the two. Thank you for stopping by. xx

      Hi Anne, it was a whirlwind kind of fun, but it counted. The view is stunning which makes taking photos easy. Last year there was a case when a girl fell over the edge of the cliff taking a selfie. Such a waste of life for something so silly. Thank you for stopping by. xx

    I think you have your choice of places to show off from what I've seen. I'm sure you've heard this a zillion times, but that water, incredible. You are brave being up there even with the armpit safety railings, an outstanding shot, both of them worthy of framing. I'd be interested in knowing the settings and if you used a tripod.

      Hi Jeanna, we do and the water is stunning in some areas. I was brave, but I had to be quick as there was a queue behind me. I didn't use a tripod, but my lens has a good stabiliser in it, so no camera shake even though I was trembling slightly (I really don't like heights). The settings I used were: 1/1000 sec. f/6.3 18 mm, ISO 100, I think the white balance was set to cloudy as I like the warmth it adds to photos... Whilst waiting my turn I was fiddle farting to get the settings right, I'm still not at the stage when I can get the settings right without fiddling. Thank you for stopping by. xx

      Hi Tas, with limited time to show them around that was the one place we had to show them. The beach is only accessible by boat, so no walking down. Can you imagine how steep the walk would be? It's a popular place with paragliders too. Thank you for popping by.

      Hi Annette, it is a stunner of a view. It's not somewhere we visit often, but this winter we have to head there again, just to photograph the difference. From November to April Zakynthos is so quiet it's lovely. Thank you for stopping by. xx

      Hi Carol, the water is unbelievably blue in some areas around the island. There are blue caves in that area which look blueish due to the reflection of the water. Thank you for stopping by. xx

    I can see why the only way to get to the beach is by boat! What an amazing landscape although I am very glad to hear the safety rails were up to your armpits. What an amazing blue the sea is. Great images Debs.

      Hi John, it's easy to see why it's a landmark used to advertise the Zakynthos. Even with the safety rails, it was quite unnerving. In certain part of the island the sea is really blue and around the blue caves, it's really blue. Thank you for stopping by. xx
