Niceness
This week has undoubtedly been a week full of niceness.
Last Saturday we enjoyed a nice walk, when we thought that all hope of getting out to enjoy a walk had gone (black clouds, hailstones and thunder rumbling in the distance can make a person think like that).
Clean Monday
Last Monday was what is known here in Greece as Clean Monday, it’s Greece’s equivalent of Ash Wednesday in the UK, when fasting for lent traditionally starts. It’s one of the big holidays over here and a time when family and friends get together and traditionally eat fish, vegetables and a special kind of unleavened bread called lagana.
Another fun tradition that only happens on Clean Monday is kite flying. Everywhere you go people will be flying kites, sometimes toe curlingly close to over head wires.
For the last few years we’ve headed down to Keri beach to fly our kite, before heading home to eat, but this year we got the opportunity to do something different and I am so glad we did.
On Monday morning we headed to the top of the island (a full forty five minute drive, which to us is forever!), to meet friends at the Monastery Spiliotissa; where this year a short walk was held to the original Monastery and back again (which was soooo funny – post and photos to come).
Afterwards we all ate traditional Clean Monday food and flew kites together.
What amazed me was the genuine niceness of people that we had never met before. We were a group of nine obviously English people, but the locals, who we did not know, were so welcoming. It was a really nice day and luckily the weather held.
Coffee Morning
I have always been adamant that I would not, could not, possible enjoy a coffee morning. For years now there has been one held close by, but I have never had the inclination to go, until a few weeks ago. Now every week I look forward to a nice slice of chocolate cake and a nice chat.
What Brought On My Change In Heart?
Through the walking group I have gotten to know people a little better and they really are nice people. Some I’ve known for years (just not very well) and others I’ve just met, but what they all have in common is that they are all very nice people.
So Wednesday’s coffee morning added a little more niceness to my week.
And To End The Week With A Bit Of Niceness
There has been talk of doing an extra long walk for sometime now and at one o’clock today, we are heading out for a twenty five kilometer walk with dinner at a taverna afterwards. Fingers crossed the weather holds and we get back before dark! What better way to end what has, so far, been a very nice week?
How has your week been?
