Shiza Cross

The Shiza Cross is undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks on Zakynthos. It is situated high on the cliffs at Kampi and is said to have been erected in memory of those who died during the the Greek Civil war. Although these days most people associate it with stunning views and beautiful sunsets.

On one of our recent Sunday Walks, with the Zakynthos walking group, we stopped off to have a nose and take a few pictures (it doesn’t matter how many times you have been to the Shiza Cross, the views are so stunning that photographs are a must!).

The Photos

As you can see from the picture the cross is huge and is clearly visible from some distance away. When taking this photo I was aiming to capture the vapour trail from the plane before it the plane disappeared out of view. It was a close call, as Muppet here forgot to check the camera was on!

      Hi Heledd, Zakynthos is a beautiful island for sure and whilst there may not be much to do here in the winter, there is always it's natural beauty to admire and appreciate. Even the gray skies can make the place looking stunning, but in a different way. Thanks for popping over and commenting. xx

      Hi Nikki, it was a close one, when I spotted the plane with the vapour trail I was determined to capture it, but almost missed it due to not being totally ready. Now I've gotten into the habit of leaving the camera on when I'm carrying it. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. xx

      The contrast between the black and white to the colour photograph is quite striking. The only Zombie thing I've ever enjoyed was the Micheal Jackson Thriller video. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. xx

      Hi Lisa, thank you. Apparently the island gets the equal amount of rainfall per year as the UK (not this year though), but when it rains it rains, so the island is quite green. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. xx

      Hi Natalie, Zakynthos really is worth a visit if you ever get a chance and I would recommend doing the walks with someone who knows. I know the chap who leads our walks is happy to take tourists in the summer, so if you are ever over just let me know. Thanks for stopping by. xx

      Hi Jen, the island is looking nice and green at the moment as everything comes out of it's winter slumber. I've never seen the cross from the sea side, but I can imagine it is a pretty impressive sight.       Hi Louise, even on Saturday, when we walked with a thunder storm threatening in the distance the views were beautiful. The greenery in contrast with the gray sky was quite dramatic and luckily we got back to the car before the storm took hold.
