Last Sundays hike was a very blustery one to find the ruins of the St Andreas monastery on Zakynthos. It is a hike we’ve done before, but we wanted to approach it from a different angle just to make it different…

And a little more challenging.

This was our fifth walk as the new Carry On Walking group and everyone seems to be loving the new sense of adventure that comes from combining walks with blindly exploring new trails.

My husband has a sharp sense of direction and really loves getting stuck into an online map searching for new trails to explore. We had thought that not always having the time to get out and test the routes first may prove to be a problem. But we were wrong. Everyone seems to love the sense of adventure that brings.

The St Andreas Monastery Ruins On Zakynthos – Through My Lens.

Off we trot down a trail that was the start of our very blustery hike. — The start of our walk and we had no idea just how windy it was going get… Zakynthos is a very green island as you can see.

Someone has to bring up the rear of the walking group.

The road is long. Luckily we didn’t have to walk it all. Finding the track down to the St Andreas monastery ruins was fun though.

You can just see the monastery ruins in the distance and the island in the far distance is Kefalonia.

The members of the Carry On Walking group are always up for an adventure and a photo oportunity.

I’d love to know more about the history of this old monastery, but I have found very little out.

I have no idea if these religious paintings are as old as the St Andreas monastery itself, but they probably are.

It's amazing to think that we are stood among the ruins of the St Andreas monastery that dates back to the 16th century or somewhere around there. — The group relaxing and taking in the scenery.

See that small island? Apparently that’s where the St Andreas monastery once stood.

It was a proper camera shoot out. Not sure who came of better. Oh the fun we have on these hikes! — A camera shoot out. Things could get messy!

I'm not sure what breed of dog this is, but it is a lovely looking dog. — I’m not sure what type of dog this is, but it’s a beauty.

As we left I couldn't resist snapping a different angle of the chapel area of the St Andreas monastery ruins. — And then it was time to leave.

I wonder if the bee hives and car wreck belong to the monastery. Seems strange as it is a ruin and is in the middle of nowhere. — Bee hives and a wreck of a car. Rather strange in the middle of nowhere.

Time to leave the St Andreas monastery ruins and try to find a new route back to the cars. At this point little did we realise just how steep the hike was going to get. — Time to leave and explore a new route back to the cars.

Not the steep bit... Yet! — We thought this bit was steep, but it got worse.

The first rule of the Carry On Walking group is to always wait at a junction for all to catch up. Then decide which direction to take. — One of the rules of the group is that we regroup at junctions, to allow slow coaches with cameras to catch up!

One of the things that is wonderful about exploring Zakynthos on foot is the changing terrain.

Into the woods we go. I wonder if we'll see any teddy bears having a picnic today? — No teddy bears picnicking today!

Through the woods and then a steep climb. Let's hope the walk leader manages to get us back to the cars before nightfall! — Now for the steep bit.

If my husband wasn't leading the walk I may have been tempted to stone him. There is steep and then there is steep!.. You have to love walking on Zakynthos! — Oh, the pain!

I love walking through scenery like this. There is something so calming about it. — I wish I could share the calmness I feel walking through areas like this.

Yay! We are nearly back at the cars after our rather blustery walk to the St Andreas monastery ruins. It was tough in places and very windy in others, but it was fun and that's what counts. — Nearly back at the cars.

Safe and soundback at the cars. Now where shall we head for our after hike 'coffee'? — Another successful hke completed as a new group. Now where to go for coffee?

Sometimes a girl has to do what a girl has to do. Even if it is in a cafe and with whiffy feet after a hike. — It’s a good job we are all friends!

Gorgeous, but I can almost feel the cold in the pictures! It is in the 60's here this week and we think we are going to die. Wimps much ?? :) Happy weekend!

  Hi Jen, it was cold and we did the same walk yesterday with some friends and the weather was exactly the same except the wind may not have been quite so strong, but it was just as chilly. I am a proper cold wimp too. No one else seems to feel the cold quite as much as me, but guess who is laughing in summer? Thank you for stopping by. xx

Wow, to those vivid trees. I can almost smell them! And the dog is gorgeous - I have no idea what kind of dog it is either, but looks like one I'd have.

That looks like a beautiful walk. I love the fact you can go off the beaten track and see something as significant as a ruined monastery, in the UK there would be a shop, visitor centre and cafe attached to that! Nat.x Plutonium Sox recently posted...Can you eat too much fruit?
