The First World Nutella Day
Did you know that February 5th is the very first World Nutella Day? Oh yes. Nutella has such a following that it warrants a day of recognition all of its own. How did I learn this wonderful snippet of information, you might be wondering?
I read my fair share of blogs and came across a post by Rosie from Get Social With Rosie where she shared a list of events and special days in February. There were some classics on the list like Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day (Feb 3rd) to a Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day (Feb 11th). Days like these may sound ridiculous, but if they make us smile and add some fun to our lives then why not?
This Pancake Day Why Not Try These Topping?
With Pancake Day just around the corner (February 13th in case you’re wondering), I thought I would share some of our family favourite fruit and Nutella pancake toppings.
This Nutella, banana and biscuit topping is a favourite with my family.
Strawberries, Nutella and crunchy peanut butter make a morish pancake topping.
If you don’t fancy fruit in your pancakes, Nutella and crushed biscuits make for a nice sweet treat.
If you can’t decide what to go for, why not try all three toppings?
Serves Makes 8-10 pancakes
With pancake day just around the corner, these toppings may add a bit of fruity sweetness to the day.
Ingredients
- "!"For the pancakes:
- 275ml fresh milk (I use whole milk, but semi-skimmed is fine too)
- 2 eggs
- 100gr plain flour
- Pinch of salt
- Oil for frying
- "!" For the toppings:
- Nutella or any other chocolate spread (Nutella is my favourite)
- Peanut butter (warmed slightly for spreading)
- Srawberries (halved or sliced)
- Bananas (sliced)
- Crushed biscuits
Instructions
- Pour the milk into a large jug.
- Add the eggs, flour and salt and mix until the batter is smooth. I find that by adding the milk first there is no problem with the flour clogging to the bottom of the jug.
- Cover and leave to sit for half an hour or so.
- The secret of cooking a successful pancake is to cook them in a very, very hot frying pan. Smoking almost. And only using enough batter to coat the bottom of the pan.
- Put a frying pan over a high heat.
- Add a touch of oil, barely a teaspoon as you don't want greasy pancakes. I find that using a piece of kitchen roll to spread the oil around the pan helps to soak up the access.
- Once the pan and oil are hot (and I do mean hot). Hold the handle of the pan and pour enough of the pancake batter into the pan to coat the bottom to the edges. Keep the pan moving so the batter spreads evenly. If the pan is hot enough the batter will set almost as soon as it spreads.
- At this point you may have to reduce the heat slightly. I find that I am always fiddling with the heat as I'm cooking pancakes, to keep it just right.
- Watch the edges of the pancake. When they start to turn a golden brown, which only takes a minute or so, it's time to turn the pancake over. Which, you can do using a fish slice. If you fancy having a laugh or amusing yourself you could always try flipping it in the air. Be warned though that, more often than not, this ends in disaster.
- The second side takes should be cooked in around thirty seconds. The pancake should be a mottled goldeny brown on both sides.
- Now, you can either serve that pancake fresh, which is nice, or do as I do when cooking for the family, and that is to stack them on a plate and pop them into a warm oven.
- "!" The toppings:
- This is the fun part!
- Take a pancake, spread a good ammount of Nutella down the center of the pancake, spread the warmed peanut butter along side the Nutella and add a line of strawberries. Roll and serve.
- On a second pancake:
- Spread a good ammount of Nutella down the center of the pancake. Add a row of sliced banana and sprinkle with the crushed biscuits. Roll and serve.
- And if you are feeling piggy and fancy three pancakes:
- Spread a thrid pancake with a good amount of Nutella
Notes
The amount of pancakes made does depend on the thickness of the pancakes and the size of the pan. I have been known to double the mixture if we are feeling really piggy!
What are your favourite pancake toppings? What will you be having this pancake day?
