Baby Gecko Out Of Hibernation

I originally had a different picture planned for this weeks photo when this cute, little baby gecko showed up, throwing me into a dither!

I very nearly put the two pictures up, but decided that wouldn’t be right, so the baby gecko won.

We’d been putting draft excluder rubber around the windows, and when my husband turned around from applying the rubber, he had this little baby gecko clinging to his top. It must have been hibernating in the shutters or even on the curtains (they are a cream colour) and somehow fell and landed on my husband.

Usually geckos, even baby ones will shoot off before you can touch them, but this one didn’t move apart from the rise and fall of it’s belly as it breathed.

During the summer it’s not unusual to find us sat on the balcony watching lizards stalking and eating insects on the walls.

After this photo was taken we put it on the balcony in the sun and it disappeared. I’ve no doubt we will be seeing that baby gecko again next summer keeping the mosquito population down.

      Hi Tamara, having wild bears living nearby must keep you on your toes! I'd be scared to let the dogs outside! I hope you manage to never wake up a hibernating bear! If you ever happen to, I am sure taking a photo will be the last thing on your mind! I am sure that Mr.Gecko is now finishing his hibernation in a cozy nook somewhere out the way.     I don't think I have ever woken an animal from its hibernation. We did have a lizard in the house once - it got so scared it dropped its tail! Now I try for my pet geckos to be the only lizards in the house! Becca recently posted...Fat Guy's Fresh DeliMy Profile

      Hi Becca, you have pet geckos? Are they the same type or are pet ones different? I have no idea what geckos over here. We have had them drop their tails (fascinating to watch the tail twitch and wriggle), usually when trying to get away from the dogs (that wouldn't know what to do if they caught them).       Hi Jen, I know. We didn't warn it or anything. We did put it outside in the sun, to warm up enough to be able to find somewhere safer to finish off it's hibernation. You must get some amazing lizards where you live too or are they lacking the cute factor?       Hi Louise, if the gecko wasn't dozy from being disturbed it would never have stayed still long enough for me to be able to get the camera from the other room and mess around before taking the photo. If we hadn't carefully picked it up and put it somewhere safe, it would probably still be there clinging on.     that's a lovely gecko. we have lots here hunting all the mozzies etc. we have the asian house geckoes which are not native but they are cute.:) i love its nobby colourful skin.
