Hiking In The Peloponnese
The funniest thing happened… This post initially went out unfinished, due to scatterbrain here scheduling it and not having time to finish it. All sorted now though.
This is the third and final part of my hiking in the Peloponnese posts… “Yay!” I hear you cry. “How many photos can one person take?”… Depends on the size of the SD card!…
Hike Two Of Day Two
After a quick coffee, when the heavens finally opened, we were given the choice of either staying to explore Leonidio or heading off for another hike. As we live in Greece and see our fair share of Greek villages the majority of us opted for a second hike.
There was a catch, we had a time limit of just over an hour as dinner was booked in a local taverna and it was a big celebratory holiday.
The second hike of the day was described as an easy walk. We had just over an hour to get to the church and back. You see that little white dot on the far side of the bay?… That’s the church!
Never ones to shirk a challenge off we went through the undergrowth.
The scenery was totally different than the mornings’ hike.
I knew I didn’t have too much time to take photos on this hike, but I managed a sneaky few.
The threat of another downpour helped to motivate us to walk faster.
It was walking through this field that I saw the most beautiful butterfly, it was only a common blue, but it was stunning.
Just one more cove to navigate and we were there.
We made it, but some of us had to get in the car for the journey back as time was limited. Just the thought of getting a lift back was just what I needed to get me to put the camera away and move my arse back. Wendy, our walk leader managed to march us back in 38 minutes. How I didn’t go arse over tit I don’t know!… Now were we quick enough to get to the taverna for an early dinner?…
Drum roll…
We most certainly were and we were the most underdressed there. Marcel, the little dog, enjoying a much-needed rest. His little legs must have been knackered! I know mine were.
The Journey Home – Killing Time In Nafplio
All good things must come to an end and on Monday it was time to head back home, to Zakynthos. We decided to leave early-ish and spend an hour or two in Nafplio before heading to Killini to catch the late afternoon ferry. As you may have read in part one the weather was against us on our drive over, so we changed our plans.
Did you know that Nafplio was the original capital city of Greece? Oh yes. This town is steeped in history and we didn’t have as much time as we would have liked to explore.
We did manage a quick nose around the lower castle ruins and a mooch around the town, which was enough to convince us to pay another visit, all being well, next year.
We didn’t have time to walk up to Akronafplio castle, but all being well we’ll make more time and next year. If you look at the left-hand side of the mountain you can just about make out the zigzagging stairway to the top. Apparently, there are eight hundred steps to climb to get there. Maybe not wise before a weekend of hiking, but that’s never stopped us before.
The view over Nafplio. The strange colour in these photos aren’t down to any editing, but a sandstorm from Africa that was hanging around in the atmosphere. Everything looked a strange orange colour.
That little turret out at sea was once a prison. The Greek equivalent of Alcatraz.
The Town Itself
We would love to have had time to sit and say a while in one of the cafes.
We only had time for a quick wander around the back streets of the old part of the town, but I think you will agree it has charm.
All being well we will return next year if not, it’s definitely a place we will visit one day.
Well, that concludes what was going to be a two-part series of posts of our weekend away. I hope you enjoyed it. It just goes to show how much can be squeezed into just a few days. I do have a small selection of flower photos taken during our hikes, so maybe I’ll put them in a separate post, I’m not sure yet. I’m all Peloponnesed out!
If you are interested in checking out the other hikes of the weekend you can see them in posts one and two.
Our weekend of walking was led by Wendy from Greece On Foot. All walks are planned in advance bearing in mind the people doing them.
