Easy Chocolate Squares Recipe
Recently I was asked to make a sweet treat for a fundraising high-tea. Being short for time, whatever I made had to be quick to throw together, but be moreish too. What to bake? What to make? Then I remembered this easy chocolate squares recipe I used to make for the children’s parties. They were always a hit and so simple to make.
Not only that, but they really will satisfy any chocoholics craving. Perfect!
A simple recipe to satisfy any chocoholics craving #recipe Click To TweetI’d not made them for years and I have no idea why? Not only are they chocolatey and moreish, they really are quick to make and to be honest far too good for children!
These chocolate squares really are that simple to make…
A few basic ingredients.
Melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup over a bowl of hot water.
Once melted pour the mixture over the crushed digestive biscuits and mix well.
Empty the chocolatey biscuit mix into a lined dish and allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares. Leave to cool totally before removing from the dish.
Once cool decorate as you like. These I drizzled with white chocolate, but for a child’s party, I would stud them with Smarties. Although, to be honest, they are far too good to share with children!
Serves 15-20 squares
These simple chocolate squares will satisfy any chocoholics taste buds. Try them and see!
Ingredients
- 250gr digestive biscuits - well crushed. I do them in the food processor, but you could pop them in a bag and batter them with a rolling pin instead.
- 50gr butter or margarine - butter has the superior taste
- 2 tbsp clear honey or golden syrup - both work well, but golden syrup gives a better taste in my opinion
- 175gr chocolate - I use a combination of dark and milk for a nice chocolatey taste. Try 50/50 first and adapt it to your taste or go with whichever chocolate you prefer.
- 1/4 tsp instant coffee - this is optional, but it does help to bring our the taste of the chocolate without being able to taste the coffee
- Pinch of salt
- Melted white chocolate, smarties or something similar to decorate.
Instructions
- Line a tin with greaseproof paper - the one I use is 10 x 6 inches and gives the finished squares a nice depth.
- Put the well crushed digestive biscuits into a large bowl.
- Put the honey (or syrup), butter (or marg), chocolate, coffee and pinch of salt into a glass or metal bowl over a pan of gentle simmering water. You want the ingredients to melt slowly together. Make sure the bowl isn't touching the water or it may go lumpy. You want a nice silky mixture.
- Once melted pour into the bowl with the crushed digestives and mix together really well.
- Leave to set, marking into squares before they cool totally.
- Once set I decorate mine with drizzled white chocolate, but smarties work well too.
Too good for children? What do you think?
