Zola, One Determined Puppy
It’s happened. We’ve acquired another dog. A puppy that we’ve named Zola, after the long distance runner Zola Bud because she came out of a bush (the dog, not Zola) and followed my husband the last four kilometers of an evening run. Which for such a young puppy took sheer determination, especially as it was still 30C.
We did take her back to where she started following my husband, to see if she belonged to anyone, but it was obvious she didn’t. She had no collar, was starving (she made a beeline for the bin, which she pulled over in one move) and had a belly full of worms. Other than that she was healthy, curious and lovable.
As many of you may know, there is a problem with stray dogs in Greece. There are people and charities working flat out trying to help dumped and abandoned dogs, so we knew that finding her a home wouldn’t be easy. Plus our other dogs didn’t seem to to have a problem with her…
And check out those eyes!
Meet Zola, Our New Addition To The Pack
We named Zola after the South African long distance runner Zola Bud.
She won us over with her determination and those eyes!
At the moment one of Alphie’s old dog collars fit her, but of course I want to get her a pretty pink one.
She has now been de-wormed, de-flead and had her first injections.
Our vet thinks she’s about ten weeks to three months old and would expect her to grow to around twenty kilograms. On that first night she did try suckling on my daughter clothes, which was heart breaking.
How could we not give this puppy a home?
So Much For Downsizing Our ‘Pack’
We are now back up to five dogs, but I’m happy with that, as the alternative was to put her back out on the street.
The whole episode has left me wondering, just how ‘fast’ my husband runs. He’s got the reputation for being the speedy runner in the house, but I’m seriously wondering now!
Having a new puppy means we are back to basics. I’ve been teaching her commands (I recommend clicker training) and she already responds to sit, lie and paw (after only a week). She has no idea what her name is yet, but will come running when she hears a whistle. She is learning her place in the pack, but likes to push her luck.
As if I didn’t have enough to do already, but I wouldn’t change a thing!
Are you a soft touch when it comes to animals? How do you acquire pets?
