For Those Less Fortunate Than Ourselves…
Christmastime is without a doubt my most favorite time of year. I love the glitz and the twinkle of Christmastime. I love the food. And I have even grown to love the fact that my birthday is very close to Christmas. But for me Christmastime is really all about family and spending quality time together.
I don’t get to see a lot of my family members over the festive period (perils of living abroad), but I know they are all safe and well and having their own special moments too. For that I am thankful.
Sadly there are a lot of people in this world who will not be having those special moments this Christmastime. Reasons will vary, but the sadness and disappointment remains the same.
Spare A Thought…
For those people who won’t be getting to spend this precious time with their loved ones due to bereavement…And spare a thought for those parents who can barely afford food and a roof over their heads, let alone be able to buy decorations and gifts for their children and loved ones.
Don’t forget those people and children who face violence and abuse every day of the year, including Christmastime… And those children who may have never felt the love they so deserve, let alone enjoyed Christmastime at the heart of a loving family.
It’s Christmastime too for those people who live rough on the streets every single day of the year, through long hot summers and freezing cold winters, not knowing where their next meal is coming from let alone caring whether it is actually Christmas.
Make Someone Feel Good This Christmastime…
I haven’t written this post to make anyone feel guilty for what they have, but as much as I love this time of year, I am all too aware that not everyone is lucky enough to feel the same way.
After putting up our decorations and making the house look all twinkly and festive, I do take time out to think of the less fortunate. For those who are probably spending their last Christmas with someone they love because of bad health.
I sit and watch our over sized tree twinkle in the dark and appreciate just how lucky I am. It makes me sad to think that not everyone is as lucky as I am. There are people just like me and you; people who feel love and pain. People who cry when they are sad and who laugh when they are happy. People who would give anything to live the life we live.
On Christmas Day when we are exchanging gifts after eating a more than ample home cooked meal, I will also feel the same happy/sadness, a contradiction in terms maybe, but it’s how I feel. Happy for the life I live, but sad that not everyone is so lucky.
Things We Can All Do To Make A Difference To Someone Else’s Life …
Spare more than a thought for those less fortunate. Maybe the old man or old lady down the road would appreciate a coffee and a chat (a plate of cookies too!). Maybe you could make their day and Christmas by gifting them with something they could do with, like a blanket, hot water bottle or some books.
Not everyone appreciates having their door knocked on by a neighbour they barely know, so if you can donate items or food to charities that distribute to less well off people and families, then please do so. It will be appreciated and they can keep their dignity (to some people that matters more than anything).
And Truly Appreciate What You Have Right Now…
As we can never know what the future holds for any of us. Enjoy this Festive Season. Enjoy the loved ones in your life. Enjoy the food on your table. Embrace the fact that you are able to enjoy this time of year…
I know I will.
Merry Christmas Everyone!
Don’t limit your goodwill to Christmastime alone. Spread it out throughout the year. There are people who are in need all year round, we are just made more aware of it at Christmastime…
