Dancing Turkeys
On a recent walk we saw these rather flirtatious and colourful turkeys. They were doing that turkey dance; ducking, gobbling and fanning their feathers. As far as turkey looks go these dancing turkeys were looking mighty fine, and quite beautiful in a quirky kind of way.
Male turkeys dance as part of their mating ritual and hormones cause their snoods and wattles (the rather ugly excess skin that hangs around a turkeys head and neck) to change colours to a deep blood red and a noticeable blue.
As far as I could see there wasn’t a female turkey in sight, but that didn’t seem to deter these proud male turkeys from doing their dance. Or maybe the female got fed up of hanging round, waiting for the ‘winner’ and wandered off to find a less self engrossed gang of male turkeys.
I wonder if these proud, dancing turkeys lived to see Christmas or did they end up as someones dinner. Being someone who is rather partial to a turkey dinner at Christmas I can’t be too much of a hypocrite, but it would be nice to think they will still be doing their thing next time I pass that way.
Did you enjoy a turkey dinner this Christmas?
