Feeling Relieved
There is no better word I can think of, than relieved, to describe the latter part of my week. I have been feeling relieved that the operation has finally happened and that my brother-in-law is now the proud owner of one of my sister’s kidneys.
It wasn’t until after their operation that I realised just how much it was on my mind. Tuesday, it was pretty much all I could think about. I kept wondering if she was one less kidney now? If she was awake yet? And how she was feeling. Those thoughts were repeated all afternoon for her husband, who only went into surgery once she was out.
The hospital was brilliant in contacting my parents to let them know when my sister came round and again when her husband came round, after their ops. Mum and Dad are back in the UK doing their bit and looking after the children, which must be a huge relief for Jack and Andy.
Five hours after having her kidney removed my sister managed to text a message to friends and family saying she was okay, and was happy on her morphine pump (which I can’t imagine would alter her dizzy ways!). On Wednesday, when the family managed to get down to Plymouth to visit she was feeling a little less bright and more like she’d been hit by a truck.
Andy (her husband), from what I have heard, is doing well and the kidney is already working better on it’s own, than his two did together. And not only have they been placed in a ward together, but their beds are beside each other, how sweet is that?.
Of course there is still a little concern in the back of my head about Andy, but so far the Doctors are happy and as he was lucky enough to receive a kidney from a live donor and had started his anti-rejection medicines before the operation, the odds are in his favour.
My sister even managed to share a photo of herself all wired up the day after the operation; she’s a tougher cookie than I!
I’ve not spoken to Mum this morning, but all being well Jack could be home on Saturday and Andy the end of next week.
Mum and Dad, who are looking after the children are feeling relieved that not only have the children been behaving nicely, which considering all that’s been going on can’t be easy for them, but also that the worst part is over with. It’s going to be weeks/months before either of them can go back to work, which I am sure will be a relief to them both when the time comes.
When my sister is feeling better I am hoping to get their permission to share some photos of them and write a post about the difference organ donation can make.
My sister is an amazing person and Andy is one of the lucky ones.
Are you a donor card carrier? Have you ever considered the difference carrying one could make to another persons life and their family’s life?
