The Group Carry On Walking

Last week the Zakynthos Walking Group was we know it came to an end. After years of planning Sunday walks, Derek our half man, half mountain goat has had to step down and it was very sad indeed.

The future of the walking group stood in the balance as there were big boots to fill. Derek put so much time and effort into keeping the group going and we knew we just don’t have that time to put in.

But where there is a will there is a way and as a group, we pulled together and the Carry On Walking Group was formed. The plan is to keep the group small, make the walks more challenging and for everyone to have input.

It’s early days yet, but so far so good and as sad as it is to leave a man behind everyone is excited to be part of the Carry On Walking Group. The main problem I can see is going to be keeping the group small.

Our first walk as a new group was one we hadn’t done before and was a 13km Agalas to Keri round walk. It was a beautiful walk, but don’t take my word for it, take a look at what I saw through my lens…

Agalas to Keri Round Walk

Why do all good walks seem to start on an uphill? But look at that scenery! — Don’t you just hate walks that start with an uphill?

These trees near Agalas looked sad and lonely. Who was I to not take a photograph of them? — What type of post would this be if I didn’t include a photograph of a tree or two?

The idyllic village of Agalas comes into view as we came over the hill. — How quaint does Agalas look nestled among the hills?

The walk between Agalas to Keri may have felt long but the scenery was quite breathtaking. With rolling green hills right to the sea. — We’re on the road to nowhere. Or so it may seem.

We've seen Marathonisi from all angles, but this view was new. — As we rounded a corner Marathonisi came into view. It was far more breathtaking in reality. It was a real WOW! moment.

There comes a moment in every walk when we have to stop and take in the view. Seeing Keri from above like tis was a another WOW! moment. — *And another WOW! moment. Keri looked so different from up high.*

*You see the chap in the orange jacket? He’s one of two cyclists parked up for a drink.*
*And we thought walking was hard going!*

*My parents stop and take in the view (and a breath), unaware that they have been snapped. I only hope I’m that fit when I’m their age*.

The village of Lithakia is just around the corner from where I live. It never fails to amaze me just how close I live to beautiful walks. — *The village of Lithakia. I live just around the bend and it never ceases to amaze*

The happy faces of the group at the end of a walk says it all. There is nothing like a walk in nature to lift the winter blues. — *The feel good factor after a walk like this is hard to explain, but I think their faces say it all.*

Oh wow that is beautiful! I am so glad you are going to "carry on", because I love hearing about and seeing pictures of your walks. I think your leader would be proud of your decision to continue on as well :)

  Hi Jen, thank you. I'm still getting used to the new camera and I'm hoping that when I do the photos will improve too. It is a very sad state of affairs walking without our 'leader'. His illness is really breaking him and all of is trying to look out for him is making it worse. He does enjoy the photos though, but it must be so difficult for him to know he will probably never walk with us again. Thank you for stopping by. xx

  Hi Laurie, Greece is such a beautiful country. The terrain changes from area to area even on the mainland. We live on Zakynthos and in the four years, we've been part of the walking group we've seen parts of it we never knew existed in the twenty-odd years we've lived here. If you ever do come across do get in touch, if you are on the mainland we've walked with a lady who runs Greece On Foot, which is hiking in the Peloponnese. Once May comes we stop walking as the tourist season takes over our lives, but if you ever come to Zakynthos we could give you some pointers. Personally, I wouldn't recommend walking in June, July or August as it can get crazy hot here. Thank you for popping by. xx

What a wonderful walk! I really enjoyed it and wish I could have been there with you. I miss hill walking... My ME/CFS means that I currently can't manage walks like tat and I do miss them.

  Hi Nikki, we are so lucky to have such beauty literally on our doorstep. This walks starting point was a ten-minute drive away from our house. I am sorry to hear that you are now unable to get out and enjoy walks. It must be so frustrating. I know the chap who originally started the walking group is beside himself as he can no longer walk... As I get older I realise that remaining active isn't always possible for everyone and try not to take it for granted. Thank you for stopping by. xx

Beautiful photos as always. So sad to have to lose your leader but how wonderful that you are able to carry on anyway. I think it's lovely that you walk as a group. I walk and run a lot but almost always on my own (except for the dog). There is something special about having someone to share the beautiful views with. Bubbles just doesn't seem to appreciate them.   Hi Nat, in the week I tend to walk on my own and I always run on my own and I do enjoy it, but there is something nice about walking with like-minded people that you can have a laugh with. My dogs are the same, they rarely stop to admire a view, but will spend an age sniffing an animal dropping!
