Little Green Bug

Shield bugs have to be one of the cutest bugs around, don’t you think? Some are quite green, almost fluorescent in colour and some are quite brown and dull. I’m not sure what determines the intensity of their colour. Maybe it’s a gender thing like we see in other creatures or maybe it’s a mating thing? I really don’t know.

What I do know is that when I saw this little green bug clinging to a tomato I had to grab my camera… I bet you saw that coming?… The contrast of the deep red of the overripe tomato and the green of the bug was quite striking.

My favourite detail in the photo has to be its beady little eyes. I’d like to think it was looking at me hoping it was giving me its best side. Another thing I noticed was how much finer the ends of its legs are, with what I’m guessing to be little hook-like ‘feet’ that allow it to cling on to shiny surfaces for dear life.

I also think it looks a bit like an Eric (no offence meant to anyone called Eric, it’s a cute name).

    I think it looks like an Eric too. Although I am feeling a little protective of that beautiful tomato and want Eric to find a new home :)

      Hi Jen, he does, doesn't he?... Don't be fooled by the look of the tomato, it turned out to be all brown and manky on the bottom. Maybe that's what attracted Eric in the first place? Thank you for stopping by. xx

      Hi Carol, thank you. The tomato he was on was actually brown and nasty on the bottom, so I wonder if that is what attracted him to it? I'm not sure if shield bugs are a good bug or a bad one for crops. Thank you for stopping by. xx

      Hi Nikki, now I can't remember the last time I saw a ladybird! Isn't that sad? They are also very cute bugs, but not very maternal, I can't help but think of those poor baby ladybirds that fled after being left at home alone! Thank you for stopping by. xx

    I love that you love it so much and I’ve never actually seen them as cute before, but If I ever see on again then I might look a bit closer and it will definitely remind me of you. It must think that tomato is such a feast!

    Ooh he is quite cute! I've never really liked them but have recently started to appreciate them a bit more, they seem totally harmless. Also, they're known as stink bugs as well aren't they? They do emit a very pungent and quite unpleasant smell. Nat.x

      Hi Nat, I'm sure your right, I've understood them to be known as stink bugs in the US and I have had the honour of having a whiff of one once, which at first I thought the children were blaming on the poor bug rather than own up. They are one of my favourite bugs, not too big or bolshy. Thank you for stopping by. xx

    SO that's a shield bug is it? I always wondered what they were called. You have captured amazing detail and you're right Debs, the contrasting colours work superbly. The splashes of water add to the image. it's a great shot. Small confession though: I have an aversion to this kind of insect. Travelling in the Bolivian Amazon many years ago a bug that looked just like this sprayed me with some kin kind of chemical and in burned my hand. I had two small scars on my left hand for years as a result of thaty insect attack! Vicious little thing it was!

      Hi John, I've always known them as shield bugs, but I think in the US they are known as stink bugs. I'd just finished watering the tomato plants so how Eric didn't fall off I don't know... Now that sounds like some adventure you had there and the photo opportunities! Bet digital cameras weren't a thing back then though? You've given me an idea though... How does Eric the therapy bug sound? He could even wear a little yellow vest to let people know he's okay to handle. Thank you for stopping by. xx
