Kiliomenos-The First Walk Of The Winter
A sure sign that the summer has drawn to an end is when the Zakynthos Walking Group starts to hit the trails again. For the last couple of weeks, Sunday was the only day of the week when I didn’t have to work or do any running around, and I was sort of looking forward to having a couple of lazy Sundays before the walks started up again.
That didn’t happen as last week our half man, half mountain goat Walk Master posted the first walk of the winter! Yay! A nice gentle 6km-ish walk through woods and along trails in Kiliomenos.
Why I Didn’t Really Mind
For the past couple of winters, our winter walks with the group have been a big part of our winter schedule. We’ve seen beautifully wild and rugged parts of the Zakynthos that I didn’t know existed. We’ve also had our fair share of laughs whilst on the hunt for a new path route or even an old church in a cave!
It’s not only the walking, company (people and dogs) and scenery I enjoy. It also gives me an opportunity to share photos of this beautiful island with others.

Through My Lens
Some very pretty crocus-like flowers were blooming nicely in the shade of the trees.
The last time the Zakynthos Walking Group got together was back in April. Many of us hadn’t seen each other since then, so it was nice to catch up again.
The stroll around Kiliomenos was a nice gentle stroll as just as Derek promised.
A Sunday Walk wouldn’t be the same without getting the eye from some locals!
The trees cast some welcome shade. It may be mid-October, but it is still hot in the sun.
Now, this looks like the perfect place for a house. Imagine waking up every morning to nothing but the sound of birdsong?
A short walk on the road. Notice the freshly painted white lines? A novelty, I can tell you!
It was nice to see these dogs loose and having the run of the ‘farm’. All too often we see dogs tethered on short chains, even out in the sticks.
As our first walk of the winter drew to an end we took a moment to enjoy the view… And to wait for some stragglers. Which I’m glad to say wasn’t me for once!
Zakynthos is a really beautiful island. This summer we had something like eighty (or more) wildfires on Zakynthos. Sadly that means on some of our walks we will witness some devastating sights, where vegetation and wildlife have been destroyed. This area of Kiliomenos was untouched by the fires.
So there you have it, our first walk of the winter around Kiliomenos, as seen Through My Lens. Next weeks walk is a coastal walk from Volimes to Micro Nisi, I can’t wait!
Where have you walked recently?
