Greek Hospitality At It’s Best
The Greek people have long been known for their hospitality. They will happily invite you into their homes and feed you until you can eat no more. Having spent many a school summer holiday in Greece, I have childhood memories of being fed weird and wonderful foods by strangers. Isn’t it funny how eating that first octopus tentacle or whole whitebait stays with you? I now love octopus, but never got used to eating whitebait with their crispy little heads.
One Time
In my restless years of travelling and working, I was working on the Greek island of Spetses. If you’ve never heard of it, check it out, it’s a tiny little island that never allows cars during the summer months. I spent a couple of fun filled summers there cleaning beaches early in the morning. I loved that job, up with the lark and finished before lunch. It was also the island where I first met my husband, who not being a morning person asked if I would take a photo of the sunrise for him. Anyway, that’s another story for another time.
I’ve gone off on a tangent here, but one of my best memories of Spetses, apart from meeting my husband (of course), was one of Easter there. Being close to Athens, Spetses is a popular destination for the Athenians, who flock there for weekend breaks and celebrations. I remember a group of us were hanging out at my now husband’s place when the Greeks who were celebrating Easter on the roof opposite passed us a plate of their spit-roasted lamb. If you have ever tasted lamb or goat done on the spit, Greek style, you’ll know how good it tastes. That plate of food, for me, meant so much more than I expect the person who passed it over meant it to…. That’s Greek hospitality for you.
Now back to My Sunday Photo…
My Sunday Photo
Last week the Intrepid Explorers took a mid-week hike down the cliffs at Agalas. Whilst down there, we came across a young chap who was collecting limpets for his dinner.
We didn’t know him and he had never met us before, but that didn’t prevent him from wanting to share his limpets with us. He was friendly and wanted nothing in return. To me, this was Greek hospitality at it’s best and left me feeling warm and fussy inside… And slightly queasy!
I really love this photo. It captures a moment of Greek hospitality rather nicely, don’t you think?
Have you been the recipient of unexpected hospitality recently?
