Our Hike Around Askos And Korithi, Zakynthos
It seems to have taken me an age to sort through these photos from an Intrepid Explorers hike we did around Askos and Korithi a couple of weeks back. That’ll teach me to take so many photos, but in my defence, I was messing with different settings so I had to take multiple photos of the same thing, didn’t I?
The Intrepid Walking group are a few of us who meet up mid-week when we can, to tackle harder and longer hikes that may not be so suitable for our Sunday walks.
Zakynthos isn’t a huge island, it’s roughly 42km in length and 20km wide, but there is a lot of variation in different parts of the island. The area around Keri has noticeably red soil and the top of the island is very stony. The feel as we walk is different too, which is an odd thing to try and describe.
A couple of weeks back we headed up to the top of the island for a hike around Askos and Korithi. It was a twelve-kilometer hike that seemed to be mainly uphill, but oh my! the views at the top were quite breathtaking.
Enough of the rambling! Let me show you around Askos and Korithi, through my lens…
Askos and Korithi – Through My Lens
The land around Askos and Korithi is very stony, which must be why there are so many old stone house ruins to see.
I wonder what the charge for postage would be? It is a very nice olive tree.
The small island is called Micro Nisi, which means small island. Very original, don’t you think?
This street of stone houses was mostly in ruins, but I wonder if someone lives in this first house?
Further down the ‘street’.
Looking back down the street of old stone houses.
Everywhere we looked there seemed to be a different shade of green. Askos and Korithi are beautiful areas.
I wonder if this old Greek fishing boat still sees the sea?
And my fascination with olive trees continues. No two olive tree trunks look the same, or it does at least seem that way.
You can imagine how welcome the shade of this huge tree is in the hot summer months. The quaint building is actually a craft shop in summer selling handmade bits and pieces.
The building beneath the tree is very pretty, don’t you think?
These three-wheeled vehicles do go on the road here. Cute? You think? You really don’t want to get stuck behind one!
These old ruins were very atmospheric I thought. My photo really doesn’t do them justice.
Just a taste of the views to come.
The climb was steep and very rough underfoot in places. A recipe for sore ankles.
It was quite something to look back and be able to see the rugged coastline of Zakynthos.
The scenery at the top of the mini-mountain was surprisingly flat and open.
Kefalonia, photo bombing again.
TaDa! The Views From The Top
Some things you can’t put into words
A panoramic view across Zakynthos. Being so high you can really appreciate how narrow the island is.
A pillar to mark the highest point on the mountain.
We managed to find a nice spot out of the chilly breeze for a picnic. It’s actually not the hiking or views we enjoy the most, but the alfresco eating!
Zola didn’t look too impressed with this old car. And I thought I liked to park and walk!
The walk down the mountain was a slow one… Or was that just me?
My excuse is I hang back to take photos and I am sticking with that!
Well, that’s a few of the photos of our hike around Askos and Korithi. I hope you enjoyed them.
