Red Cage Fungus
I wasn’t going to partake in My Sunday Photo this week as the days are busy and time is limited. Then this morning as I was lying in bed listening to the quiet sounds that are only audible predawn, I thought why not? So up I got, let the dogs out, stuck the kettle on, checked on the poorly cat, got the fire burning, made a coffee and grabbed my laptop. I can get so much done, so much faster when the family are still sleeping!
Choosing a photo wasn’t difficult as we came across a rather strange looking fungi on last Sunday’s walk and I’d already earmarked it as a Sunday photo. So here it is a last minute Sunday Photo.
My Sunday Photo
It doesn’t look real, does it?
This rather odd looking fungi is known as a red cage fungus or lattice fungus and an odder looking fungi I have never seen. Firstly a white egg-like emerges from the ground before the red cage fungus pops out of the ‘egg’ (I’m not sure if ‘pops’ is the right word, but it’s how I imagine it to happen).
You can see why, on first glance, the red cage fungus resembles something from a science fiction film. It was a very strange fungus indeed.
Have you ever come across a red cage fungus before?
