Marathia, Zakynthos
Last week I wrote that many of us had foregone the Sunday walk to Marathia, Zakynthos because of the weather. Well, it turned out that the people that did go stayed nice and dry as it didn’t rain. However this week the walk was repeated and guess what?… We got caught in a thunderstorm!… “I never expected that,” to quote a popular song.
To be fair the sky was greyish (the cloud looked high though) and we knew there was a chance of rain, but I didn’t expect the amount of rain or thunderstorm that we did get caught in. It was the perfect test for our waterproofs. I learned that my fold-away trousers are lightweight and waterproof, but my jacket is only shower proof (as I did get damp – not overly, but enough to get cold).

Through My Lens #8
From this angle, you can see why Marathonisi Island is also known as ‘Turtle Island’!
The walk up to the viewpoint is uphill from the start (excuse the slight blur, I have only just noticed it).
Much of the walk to the cliffs was off track and loose underfoot.
We had to watch our footing.
We have done this walk a couple of times before, but the weather this time added atmosphere to the views.
The arch is another iconic view on the island.
Nearly there. The iconic viewpoint is just over the horizon.
It’s best to keep a healthy distance from the edge, especially if it’s breezy.
The Viewpoint
The steep drop meant I had to take care when taking these photos.
Onward and upward.
This I find to be the hardest part of the climb. It’s very loose underfoot and gets the thigh muscles screaming for mercy!
We were heading to the top right of the photo, to walk back down past the Watching Witch. You can just about make her out, centre top.
Up we climbed taking in the views on the way. You can see ‘Turtle Island’ to the left of the photo and Gerakas in the distance.
Nearly at the top! I’m trailing behind as usual.
Another natural arc. Another iconic landmark.
‘Turtle Island’ and Gerakas from a different angle (honest).
If only you could hear the thunder rumbling overhead!
After this photo, I put my big girls’ camera safely away as it started to chuck it down. No need to worry, we were well prepared with waterproofs in our bags. Although I soon learned that my jacket is not actually waterproof, but showerproof instead!
By the time we got back to the car all the dogs looked like drowned rats. Alphie doesn’t seem to realise just how lucky he is to have a ‘storm jacket’!
I’d like to add that there were some ‘Golden Oldies’ on the hike, who did themselves proud! It wasn’t an easy one and I hope that I’m that fit when I’m their age!
Have you ever visited the iconic viewpoint at Marathia, Zakynthos?
