We’ve Created A Monster!
My daughter is a bookworm with a thirst for knowledge, so it’s not unusual to find her browsing books online and requesting to buy particular books she wants to read. So recently when I found her browsing through books on Amazon, I thought nothing of it.
She was browsing the Kindle Classics on Amazon, many which are free to read (she much prefers reading ‘real’ books, but the Kindle is so handy for getting books quickly and cheaply). After a while of concentrated searching she asked if she could buy George Orwell’s, Animal Farm as she couldn’t find it in the Classics.
I said yes, and she clicked the Buy Now button. At that time I never took much notice of her smile as she’s always happy when she’s got a good book to read.
Warning bells should have gone off when I found her happily cleaning and tidying her room (something she never, ever does without being prompted). When I asked if she was feeling okay, her answer was that she wanted a clean room so she could really enjoy reading the book she had just bought. Apparently she needed a clean ambiance in which to really enjoy the book. Something I found odd because she’s always reading, whatever the state of her room.
Again I didn’t think anything of it and was just grateful that she had tidied her room.
The Monster Shows It’s Head
Later on whilst having a little tete -a-tete, she confessed that she had an ulterior motive for wanting to read George Orwell’s, Animal Farm and that ulterior motive was to get one over on a friend. Not being of a confrontational nature myself I was slightly taken back.
What shocked me even more was how her face lit up as she shared her reason with me. She got a crazed look in her eye and started laughing hysterically.
Apparently she’d spent the afternoon with a friend whose favourite book is George Orwell’s, Animal Farm and they had somehow used it as a reason for thinking that Communism is a good thing. I don’t know the ins and outs of their conversation, but my daughter saw holes in what her friend was saying, but instead of saying anything without having the knowledge to back it up, she saw it as a challenge and wanted to arm herself with facts.
Her plan was to learn as much as she could and then to instigate a rerun of the conversation she had with her friend, pointing out the facts.
If you could have seen the delight and evil in her face, it was classic (if a little unsettling)… It seems that we have indeed created a monster!
Needless to say she read the book in an evening and has done more studying of the Soviet Union, even to the point of watching documentaries about it, than she has for her upcoming exams.
Our conversation was as equally funny as it was unsettling, although I will admit that the hysterical laughing that was coming from my daughter made me really question if my daughter had been taken over by some unseen force.
She has not yet met up with her friend, but I would love to be a fly on the wall when that conversation goes down!
So tell me, have you ever had cause to believe that you have created a monster?
