Take Care Of Your Skin This Summer
With spring in full swing, most of us enjoy getting out and about in the better weather, but do you take steps to take care of your skin before you step out the door to spend a few hours outside enjoying the sun? Or do you just grab your bag/dog/camera/child and head out without giving your skin a second thought?
No doubt there are times when you stand in front of the mirror, wondering where on earth all the wrinkles have come from? I know I do. Especially when stood by my sixteen year old daughter (something I try not to do too often, for the sake of my self esteem!). And did you realise that spending too much time in the sun without sun protection has probably contributed to many of those wrinkles forming early?
It’s Time To Take Care Of Your Skin!
The effects of not protecting your skin from the sun is premature aging at best and skin cancer at worst. Is it really worth taking that risk?
The funny thing is that most people are probably more concerned about their skin looks now, than premature aging and getting skin cancer. Which is only natural as most of us live in the here and now, and only focus on what we can see now.
There are plenty of beauty creams, serums and oils promising to keep our skin looking youthful, dewy and wrinkle free. And there are many people (men and women) who are happy to part with ridiculous amounts of money in the hope of holding onto their youthful looks for a tad longer. Money that would be better spent on other things like sun cream, a decent hat and sunglasses.
Let’s be honest, no amount of money can prevent aging. Aging happens, it’s a fact. We may not like it, but there is not a lot we can do about it, so it’s probably better to learn to love ourselves warts, wrinkles and all, than to get all hung up on aging (I’m still not standing beside my daughter in front of a mirror if I can help it!).
It’s not all doom and gloom though and there are things we can do to prevent premature aging.
How To Take Care Of Your Skin
- The sun has to be one of the biggest factors when it comes to premature aging. If you’ve spent years worshiping the sun, it will show in your skin. The sun causes irreversible skin damage and whilst having a tanned skin looks nice (if not overly crispy), it will leave your skin resembling the thick skin on cold custard in the long run and you have to admit that the skin on cold custard does not look good. However you don’t need to avoid going out in the sun, in fact that would be plain silly as the sun helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which helps keep our bones nice and strong, as well as reducing the risks of getting some pretty nasty diseases and ailments. You just need to be sensible when going out in the sun for any length of time and apply sunscreen and wear a wide brimmed hat.
- Do get into the habit of wearing sunscreen on your face, winter and summer. You want to be wearing an SPF of fifteen or above.
- As we get older our skin cell rejuvenation slows down (as well as everything else!). We can help our skin by gently exfoliating several times a week. You can do this by using a face wash that contains micro-beads (just make sure they aren’t too harsh on your skin), a soft face brush or a slightly abrasive face sponge (think rough towel rather than pan scourer).
- Drinking enough water will plump up skin cells helping reduce the sight of wrinkles. Not drinking enough water will leave the skin looking tired and enhance those wrinkles (go on grab yourself a glass of water, I’ll wait).
- Exertion in the form of exercise is good for the skin too. You know that not so attractive ruddiness that we all love when we are working out? Well that’s actually good for our skin. Our skin thrives on the oxygen and nutrients that are pumped around our body during exercise.
- We’ve all heard it before, but our eating habits really do show in our skin. I’m not saying ditch the junk totally, a little bit of bad is good, but if you eat more junk than is good for you it will show in your skin. Our skin loves a healthy balanced diet and it shows.
- Sleep deprivation also shows in our skin. When we sleep our body is doing amazing things, restoring and repairing the bits that need attention, our skin included. If we don’t get enough sleep our body doesn’t have the time to properly take care of our skin (isn’t nature wonderful?).
- Smoking. We all know it’s no good for us, but are you prepared to give up in order not only to feel better, but to help keep those wrinkles at bay for just a bit longer?
So tell me how do you take care of your skin?
