Surprise!
This week has been a week of surprises. Greg’s will be celebrating his nineteenth birthday next week (scary – where has the time gone?), and a couple of weeks ago he surprised us by saying he wanted to celebrate his birthday by going on a walk with a few people he’s got to feel comfortable with from the Zakynthos walking group.
You could have knocked us down with a feather!
He caught us totally by surprise, and as horrible as it may sound, we put him off (or at least we thought we had)as we know people are busy and may not be able to make it… But after running it by a couple of people, who were up for the idea, it seemed like something we could arrange secretly and surprise Greg’s with on his birthday, next week.
So, at the beginning of the week I was bracing myself to set up a secret group chat on Facebook, thinking who to invite and hoping that people would be able to make it.
The Real Surprise
On Monday evening Greg’s started to do his thing, that indicates to us that he is getting a little stressed… And then he totally bowled us over, by declaring that he was thinking of contacting a few people from the walking group to ask them whether they could join us for a walk on his birthday.
Well, the room fell silent. Me and my husband looked at each other, both thinking the same thing; do we forfeit trying to arrange a surprise birthday walk, with a barbecue, back at ours afterwards and let him arrange it or do we put him off the idea and go ahead and plan it as a surprise for him ourselves.
As he started to get a little more agitated, we decided to tell him what we were planning to do, but to let him organize it instead, after all we are always trying encourage him to do things.
I am so glad we decided to let him take over, as he is loving every minute of the fuss and preparations. He has planned (with his Dad) an eight kilometer route to walk, up and across the hills of Pantokratoras with stunning views.
And today after a ten kilometer trail clearing trek up Marathia, we went home to get the dogs and set out out again to check out the second half of the walk he’s mapped out (we already knew the first half), and he was so happy to be doing it (preparation is an important part of keeping Greg’s calm and stress free).
Next week is going to be a busy one, with birthday preparations and three walks planned, but we say bring it on!
How has your week been?
