5 Good Reasons Why You Should Holiday In Zakynthos
For anyone who doesn’t know, Zakynthos is one of the largest of the Greek Islands situated in the Ionian sea. It really is a beautiful Island boasting several holiday resorts, and plenty of out of resort accommodation in the form of private villas and apartments.
I’ve been living in Zakynthos for more years than I care to remember and whilst living here isn’t always a bed of roses, at the moment I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather live.
The winters are short in comparison to the UK, and the way of life gives me the chance to stop and smell the roses more often than I would get chance to if I lived in England. The life here can be as simple or as complicated as you make it.
But this post isn’t about me and what it’s like living here. This post is about why you should holiday in Zakynthos.
Why You Should Holiday In Zakynthos This Summer…
Good Reason Number One…
I think one good reason for choosing anywhere to holiday would be what it has to offer holiday makers. And Zakynthos has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a lively holiday, partying until the sun comes up or prefer a quiet holiday, unwinding and getting away from it all, you will find a holiday here to suit your needs.
You can choose from the great number of hotels and apartments in resort, or browse the web for a more personal holiday experience staying in a private villa off the beaten track (which usually requires hiring a car too).
By choosing to stay in a private villa, you never need go into the resorts unless you want to. In fact if you are looking for a quiet holiday, you only need ever leave the villa to get food in (but seriously why would you not explore some of the island at least?).
Good Reason Number Two…
Another good reason why you should choose to holiday in Zakynthos is the beaches; they are beautiful. Obviously if you holiday in the high season the main beaches can be a little on the busy side (never as busy as I remember Dawlish Warren being on a sunny day, mind you), but if you hire a car you can get out and explore some of the smaller, less accessible beaches and believe me you won’t be sorry.
Just imagine spending a lazy day on a sandy beach. Only moving to cool off in the sea and maybe to find a proper Greek taverna to enjoy lunch in. There’s never one too far away.
If water sports is more your thing, then you won’t be disappointed as some of the beaches out of the turtle zone do have water sports.
Good Reason Number Three…
The stunning scenery.
If lazy beach holidays aren’t your thing, then you won’t be disappointed with the scenery. You can get around and explore the island by car in three days, but why not take a leisurely drive around and check out some of the old villages inland?
There are cliffs, caves, mini mountains, hills, pine forests, olive groves and flat expanses of open land to explore and appreciate.
And there is always a Greek taverna to stop and enjoy lunch in some where (top tip – if you see a taverna that looks busy with locals, odds on the food is going to be good).
Pretty Good Reason Number Four…
The weather.
You are pretty much guaranteed a rain free holiday if you choose to holiday in Zakynthos in June, July and August. The end of September can sometimes see the odd thunder storm after the hot summer. The temperatures in May and October are warm in the day with cooler nights, obviously there is a higher chance of rain during these months, but they are perfect months for getting out and exploring the island as it’s not too hot or busy.
And Finally Reason Number Five…
You get good value for money if you are coming to Zakynthos from the UK. The exchange rate is invariably in your favour. I’ve not known a time when the Euro was stronger than the British pound.
Eating out is cheap compared to the UK, as is enjoying a drink or two. If coach trips and and boat trips are your thing, then you won’t be disappointed with the prices (just be realistic as people here do have to earn a living too).
Jewelry is also a big thing to buy here as the gold is good quality and you may get an even better deal if you play your cards right.
Okay, So There Are Many More Reasons For Taking Your Holiday In Zakynthos Too…
So here is one more:
If you play your cards right you may get to see a Loggerhead turtle or two. They are protected species and there are strict rules applied to what you can and cannot do on the nesting beaches.
Remember the rules are applied for the benefit of the turtles and not you, there are people patrolling and looking out for the turtles on these beaches, so if they request you move your stuff or don’t dig in the sand, they are asking as the survival of the Loggerhead turtle depends on us.
I’ll Leave You With Some More Photographs Whilst You Decide Whether To Holiday In Zakynthos Or Not…
And Finally, One To Watch Out For…
Have you booked your summer holiday? If so, where are you heading?
If those 5 reasons don’t convince you. Just check out the scenery in some of my Walking On Zakynthos posts.
