By the appearance of a strange (and rather cute) kitten…
The Other Morning…
I went out to feed Ugg, our not-so-feral-anymore cat and her kitten (sadly we were down to one), when I heard mewing from behind our freezer. Which was rather strange as our cats were rumbling away, awaiting their breakfast right in front of me.
I went to get a torch to see what the source of the mewing was, I wasn’t taking any risks by putting my hand down behind the freezer when there was a strange cat behind it. When I returned the source of the mewing was on top of the freezer, obviously not in any distress and very friendly.
I put food out and it tucked in with no hesitation, a little wary of Ugg and Purdy, but not worried enough to step away from the plate. It was funny to watch this little kitten seemingly take charge of the food, as Ugg and Purdy hissed a little and backed off leaving the kitten to have her fill.
I Am No Cat Expert…
But it doesn’t take an expert to work out that this kitten is used to being handled; when Ugg turned up with her kittens it took time and patience before they would come anywhere near us.
This kitten on the other hand, is happy to be picked up and if you hold a hand out she will rub up against it making happy rumbling noises.
She’s young, probably no older than four months; when I put an old jumper into the crate she’s taken for herself (it was Uggs and Purdys daytime nap place, Ugg has now found another crate), she tried to suckle on it. Which was sort of sad to see.
On The Bright Side…
She doesn’t seem at all worried at being separated from her Mum and ending up in a strange place with strange cats. I had expected her to try and find her way back to where she came from, but where that is I have no idea.
It’s baffled me as to how she ended up on our back balcony. My husband recently fenced in the back of the house, surrounding it with a five foot high wire fence, which she couldn’t fit through or climb over. I’ve spent time patrolling the boundaries and cannot for the life of me see a place where a kitten, even that small, could have accidentally wondered into our property.
And so have concluded that she was dropped over the wall, by someone. Which is also a strange thing for anyone to do, as we have dogs, and people know we have dogs, what they don’t know is that we have cats. The cats hang around at the side of the house, around the woodpiles and in the shed, which is all out of bounds to the dogs.
We do have neighbours on that side, but the house isn’t that close and there is a wall and a row of fir trees pretty much obscuring our view and why would they? They have three dogs that are really not cat friendly and they don’t even touch the dogs, so can imagine that it wouldn’t cross their mind to pick up a kitten, lost or otherwise.
We Have Named Her Bobby…
And are happy to feed and look after her as long as she’s content to be here.
The Other Kitten…
Has warmed to her now and last night they snuggled together in the crate and whilst Ugg isn’t over the moon about the kittens arrival, she tolerates it and even went as far as trying to head butt it yesterday.
I Am Totally Baffled…
And I think it’s safe to say that the mystery of where she came from will remain a mystery.
Have you had a tame animal mysteriously turn up in your garden? What did you do with it?
