So I’ll Just Call It Planting…
I am so excited! This week we’ve planted some winter veg (okay, so tomatoes and rocket may not be strictly winter, but in they went!).
I love fresh veggies straight from the garden. They taste far superior to supermarket bought stuff and contain a much better vitamin content than the often tired, and over the top vegetables that are found in supermarkets. What can be better than popping out back to pick some fresh, homegrown vegetables?
Not much…
I’ll Be Honest…
I am an utterly hopeless gardener and up until this winter have had it easy as my Dad, who is a bit of a gardener has always let us have some of their hard, grown veg. But what have we been missing out on? The satisfaction of growing our own!
In The Past…
I have attempted to grow summer fruit and veg, but with the summers being so hot, plants must be watered twice daily and with plenty of water, which is not only time consuming, but mind blowingly tedious. So apart from cherry tomatoes I’ve never managed to nuture any plants to fruition.
My Parents Had A Little Faith Though…
And mentioned that winter veg is so much easier to grow, as we get plenty of rain and don’t really have to worry about frost.
And the seed was sown, so to speak.
Last Week…
Neal fenced in the garden at the back of the house. Up until now it’s been closed off with a gate, to stop the dogs going out back and making a bid for freedom (and the chickens that roam freely back there). Opening it up has made the garden seem huge!
Neal also dug over a patch of the garden for us to have a go at growing our own winter veg. This week we planted seskula (not sure how to spell that), spinach and rocket seeds and some cauliflower, broccoli and tomato plants. I put the plants in and Hubby, Dearest went behind me making troughs in the soil where the water can sit (he couldn’t help himself!).
That’s it. I’ve nominated Neal to be chief caterpillar remover (my days of touching green, slimy things are long behind me!) and chief weeder. The children can be sent out to water the patch if need be and I’ll be tickled pink to be able to cook something, fresh from the garden… Okay, I’ll even go as far as carrying any leaves and stalks to the compost heap if no one else is around!
I’m Feeling Really Confident About Our Winter Veg…
We are one step ahead of the birds (netting; although I want to do as the old Greeks do and cover the seedlings with olive twig. So clever!) What else can possibly go wrong? The chap next door is eighty three years old and still manages to cultivate a garden that will put anything we ever do to shame, if he can do it on his scale then we surely will manage to harvest a little goodness from our garden.
All Being Well…
We will be eating something fresh from the garden in the New Year, it could even be sooner depending on the type of plants we’ve bought.
Are you any good in the garden? Or are you like me and like the thought of fresh veg straight from the garden, but lack the dedication needed to follow it through?
