The Zakynthos Youth Theatre were asked if they would like to perform at the Zakynthos 5th Annual Dog Show; a dog show that is put on to help raise funds to sterilise, feed and re-home the stray and abandoned dogs we have on the island.
It was a fun day out. Dog owners entered their faithful mutts into the show (many of the dogs there were once either strays, born on the streets or dogs abandoned and left to fend for themselves for whatever reason), where there are several titles up for grabs. There was Mr. and Miss. Zakynthos titles up for grabs, as well as the usual titles you would find at a dog show. There were also plenty of laughs, as the saying never work with dogs or children didn’t come about for no reason!
The Zakynthos Youth Theatre…
Were invited to perform at the show with only a weeks notice and stepped up to the challenge admirably. They decided to perform sketches highlighting how dogs are part of the family and shouldn’t be mistreated or abandoned when they misbehave.
You could actually feel the excitement of the group as they got ready. They were buzzing.
The stage was the arena, which wasn’t the most ideal of places to perform, as being outside and having no microphones their voices weren’t overly loud and you always have ignorant people, who because they aren’t interested in what’s going on decide that it’s okay to talk.
All things considered though, the children did a great job; they had fun and it showed. There was no script as such and the youngsters improvised as they went along.
Photos were difficult to take as there were people on all sides making the pictures too busy and the video someone took didn’t come out well due to the general noise and talking, but that’s just one of those things.
Afterwards Babs took the theatre group back to her house hoping to video it again, without outside noise, but the group had other ideas, having spread word to group members to take treats to eat as way to celebrate after their show. By the time I picked Greg’s up, the rest of the group was buzzing on a sugar high (Greg’s didn’t have anything) and videoing never happened.
It Really Was Lovely…
To see the theatre group having such fun. It didn’t matter to them or to anyone else that the surroundings for the show weren’t the best, what mattered was they did their best and had fun.
They Have Now…
Got a booking to sing carols at the Christmas party held to raise funds for the dogs, with plenty of time to practice and an indoor venue I’m sure it will be spot on.
And on December 16th, they are also performing a Nativity play in the town center during the Annual Christmas Fayre that is held every year to raise funds to help struggling families on the island.
So it’s exciting times for the Zakynthos Youth Theatre.
The page was set up by a local lady, who works tirelessly helping the stray and abandoned dog population on Zakynthos.
