I Really Don’t Thinks So!…
Although that’s not what I’ve been reading in a certain ‘news’ paper recently.
Think about it. Do you really think that doing just a two minutes workout is going to help you get fit?
Personally I can’t see it and it’s no wonder that there are so many people who are confused as to how to get fit with headlines making stupid statements like that.
The article claimed that people could get fit by doing just one two minute HIT (High Intensity Training) workout a week. That’s less time than it will probably take you to read this post…And people will fall for it!
Common Sense…
Should tell us that isn’t quiet right. Although on reading the article it does claim that the bare minimum workout takes just a few minutes to complete (that is including the worm up and warm down!).
It claims that a two minute warmup followed by a twenty second burst of intense activity, followed by a two minute go slow and then another interval of twenty seconds at high intensity, once a week is enough to get us fit. Oh and don’t forget to warm down for a minute of two, to allow your heart rate and muscles to relax….
As I keep saying… Really?
If Only It Were That Simple!…
Then no one would have an excuse for being unfit. After all how many of us can’t spare a few minutes a week to improve our fitness?
We would no longer be able to come up with the classic excuse of not having time to work out…Bet we still would though!
The Real Reason Why This Article Bothered Me…
I have thought long and hard about what the article claimed and what really bothers me most is that not everyone knows not to believe everything you read in the papers. Meaning that there will be people out there who truly believe that they can get fit by just doing a few minutes exercise a week and spend the rest of the time recovering on the sofa.
My children browse through the same paper. And if I wasn’t incensed enough to draw their attention to it they may well believe that the ten minute walk home from school or the two minute walk home from the bus means they are as fit as world class athletes…Something that I make sure they know, when I’m trying to cajole them into working up a sweat.
In other words the article was totally misleading.
The Most Sensible Way To Get Fit…
Is to find a physical activity you enjoy and do it regularly, but failing that why not:
- Take a brisk walk to the shops instead of using the car.
- If you do have to take your car into town, then park a bit further out and walk.
- Get lively with your children or grandchildren. Take them on at a game of football or basketball. Dig out that old Frisbee that’s buried away with the summer stuff.
- Take the stairs when you can and climb them as fast as you possibly. Climbing stairs (if done enough) is an excellent way of getting fit.
- Even going full throttle when cleaning the house will help.
- Borrow (or buy) a bicycle…Don’t forget to wear a helmet!
To make a difference to your fitness you need to increase your heart rate and get slightly out of breath. Not everyone’s point of breathlessness is the same so take things at your own pace and listen to your body.
The More Active You Are The Fitter You Will Get…
It will get easier too. I promise.
We could all do with being a little fitter than we are and the benefits of being fit are numerous:
- The fitter and more active we are, the more energy we have.
- The fitter and more active we are, the better our sleep quality.
- For most of us being physically active regularly means an increased metabolism. Which means our body is more efficient at burning calories. Which is a plus if we are trying to lose weight…Still got to eat sensibly though!
- Being fit and healthy reduces the risks of getting some of the nasty diseases that most of us would rather not get. I’m not saying that fit and healthy people don’t get nasty illnesses, they can and do. It’s just by being fit you can reduce the chances.
The Bottom Line Is…
Please don’t be taken in by faddy exercise and diet plans. And remember if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is!
