My Love…My Kindle…

I said it would never happen. I said that nothing could be as good as reading a real book, you know with paper pages.

I was a doubter. I doubted that I would ever love a Kindle, but I accepted that if I wanted to have a better choice of books to read, then I had to get a Kindle.

This time last year we had around five hundred books that tourists had left behind after their holidays. It sounds like a lot of reading material, but I found that I was reading books that didn’t always appeal to me and Catherine, my daughter and book addict, prefers the type of books that wouldn’t really be classed as holiday reading. Although she is fully bi-lingual, she prefers to read English books.

In The End…

We had to get rid of half of the books as we just don’t have the room to keep them all and it was doing my husbands head in.

It was sad. There were a lot of tears (tears of insane laughter) as me and Catherine sorted through them all, trying to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. It was exhausting too.

It was then that I decided I wanted a Kindle. We’d got Catherine a Kindle Keyboard just after they first came out, just to help keep her in books (she prefers ‘real’ books), I wasn’t overly impressed by it, but I could see that if I had a Kindle I could download books that I actually wanted to read and keep my husbands blood pressure down at the same time.

So…

For my Birthday and Christmas present (perils of having a birthday near Christmas!) I got a Kindle Paperwhite (I would have loved a Kindle Voyage, but I couldn’t justify paying the price for it).

And WOW!…

I was smitten. Not only was the Kindle much sexier than I expected, but the box it came in was soooo sleek and sexy too. And when popped into it’s pretty pink case, it was just the most perfect gift I could have asked for (and that’s before I started reading on it!)

Just holding my Kindle is a pleasure. It is so light and comfortable to hold that my reading pleasure really is enhanced. I had actually become picky when choosing books to read; often not reading a book because the text was too small or the font was all wrong or the page was too grey.

I love the fact I can alter the font, the font size and the back lighting.

I love the fact I can get any book I fancy in a matter of seconds (we have signed up to the Kindle Unlimited service to help keep book costs down).

I love the dictionary, X-ray and search settings on it. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to flick back through the pages if I needed to. I needn’t have worried though, as a couple of taps and I can flick back without loosing my place.

I like the fact that this wonderful little gadget can help transport me to another place. Like a holiday in me head!

    Love my Kindle too, we too don't have enough room for all of the books that I have. I have donated many to the library... I didn't think I would like a Kindle, I have a very old one and am thinking of upgrading now, that is how much I love mine too.       Hi Ray, I kn ow exactly what you mean when you say you like reading the right hand page...The left hand page always gives some resistance. We don't have room for many books either and it was the subject of many disagreement. Mum and Dad took a load of books from us, which they also read, lend out or use to swap for better books in the summer. I would have loved to have got the Kindle Voyage, but couldn't justify spending that kind of money, so settled for a Paperwhite, the back light is excellent...Which I can recommend!     I thought this was something I'd never ever get being such a book addict, but, had a voucher for a free book download from Amazon so put the kindle app on my ipad and, I have to say, it is an unexpected pleasure. Since getting my dizzy migraines I can't seem to read more than 2 pages of a proper book at a time...the one on my ipad is so comfortable and easy to use that I'm tempted to do more!       Hi Lisa, there seems to be so many people who weren't excited by reading books on a Kindle, but have then gone on to change their minds. I love the back light and font controls, being able to change settings to suit me has made reading much more pleasurable and as a result I have been able to read much faster and for longer.     I was like you before I got my Kindle, the first one I had was the keyboard one and I fell in love. It was light and I could read whenever I liked. Now I have a Kindle Paperwhite and I LOVE it! It's awesome, I can read in bed without disturbing the Hubby and it's so light I can carry it in my handbag just in case I get an opportunity to read. Great Post Debs.       Hi Morgan, I can't believe how much I love my Kindle Paperwhite too. Last night I was having trouble sleeping and rather than toss and turn I spent a couple of hours reading, knowing I wasn't disturbing the husband (probably not entirely a good thing as today I am tired!). I like you carry it round in my bag too as I often find myself having to wait somewhere for something or someone and it is barely heavier than a packet of tissues!       Hi Rabia, my husband and son have the Kindle app on their phones (it has encouraged my son to red more too) and my husband says it's better than he expected. Although he s not a big reader he likes to have a book with him for if he has time to pass somewhere. We really don't have the room for books and I can understand why my husband was getting cross with the amount we had. I can't ever see our home being a 'real' book free zone, but I am definitely a Kindle convert.     That is such a cute kindle case! I love it! I admit I have not made the switch over to the dark side yet... I think it is sad that real books are being thrown to the wayside with technology in it's place so I haven't been tempted to even try a kindle yet but I admit your post has made me consider it actually! I may look into getting one! They do seem to have several benefits! Although I don't have much spare time to read anymore these days! The last books I read were while I was pregnant!

      Hi Amy Lou, I was the same. I have always loved books and couldn't imagine replacing holding a book in my hands with holding a Kindle, bit I did and I am smitten. It's far better than I had imagined. Reading now is like running a hot knife through butter (my eyes easily skim and digest the words, whereas that wasn't happening with printed books. I was finding the print to small or the font not right or the page a funny colour and then there's that crease in the middle where words disappear. I can highly recommend the Kindle Paperwhite....I love the case too, couldn't get a Kindle without a pretty pink case!     Oooh, good one, Debbie! So many people are anti-Kindle because they love holding a physical copy. I was a bit hesitant, but when I got mine I never looked back. I also hear It's especially handy if you're indulging in a guilty pleasure read on a plane like Judy Blume "Tiger Eyes" and want to disguise it from the other passengers-- because you're a 35 y/o woman reading Judy Blume "Tiger Eyes".       Hi Rebecca, my Kindle has become my new BFF! Sad I know!....We passed the books on we got rid of, as living on a Greek island there are quite a few English people who also like to while away the hours by reading. Most of the books we have collected over the years we haven't had to pay for as people leave them, but the choice wasn't great...We still have a full book case in the living area plus a couple in the children's room, so I don't think we will ever be a book free house.......But I would find it hard to pick up a real book with enthusiasm....My Dad actually passed a book my way (under the radar of my husband) saying it's really good. So I'm tracking it on Amazon and when it comes down in price I will pounce and buy it, rather than read then actual book...Quite sad really, but I'm happy! I agree that a Kindle is so much more than just a Kindle. It's amazing little gadget that brings joy (and plenty of books) into my life...Like you said a whole library in the palm of my hands....Gush, gush....     Ooh. I have always been anti kindle. I love to sniff my books and flick the pages but being able to change the font would be a huge bonus for me and I guess I could read without a bedside light as well.       Hi Louisa, before getting one I could never really see the appeal, for me it was more the fact that it made English books more accessible, but now I genuinely prefer reading on my Kindle than a book. I have found I can read faster as my eyes flow easier over the words (which is probably due the back-lighting). Which as you said means I can also read if I can't sleep without having to turn a light on. Being able to read outside in full sunshine without any nasty glare is also a big plus for me. My daughter on the other hand much prefers a real book and only uses her Kindle as it gives her a wider choice of books at her fingertip...And she likes the classics which are free on Amazon.     Oh that is a cute pink Kindle!! I was just like you before I got my Kindle. I thought nothing could replace the paper and spine books for me. Now I am sold, just like you are.Everything right at my fingertips in such a cute slim package. Hefting around big books to Dr's offices and such gets heavy!       Hi Jen, I find it so much easier to read on too. No more battling to read those words hidden in the crease of the book. And like you said a Kindle is so much easier to lug around than a 'real' book. I love browsing the offers and have picked up some good reads on there. At the moment we are trialing Kindle Unlimited; it seems worth it as all four of us like to read and we can always buy any books we really want that aren't available on Unlimited....Did you ever get round to reading Water For Elephants?
