The Treasure Hunt…
A few weeks back I was asked to make a cake for a treasure hunt being held to raise funds for the stray dogs on Zakynthos. It was nice to be asked as I used to create novelty cakes to order, as a little side earner when the children were small. It was something that I enjoyed doing, but for one reason and another it was something that I stopped doing a while back.
Of course I said yes, although I was more than a little nervous as I felt out of practice. So for the past few weeks ideas for the shape of the cake haven’t been too far from the front of my mind.
In the end I decided that a cake in the shape of a treasure chest was the most appropriate shaped cake for the event and spent the best part of last Saturday creating it ( I always bake and freeze the sponge beforehand, making it easier to shape when it comes to creating the cake) and baking cupcakes for the occasion too.
The treasure chest cake was to be raffled off and the cupcakes were available to buy if anyone fancied them.
The Treasure Hunt Itself…
Was fantastic! In our car was me, Neal, Gregs and Catherine and we clocked up over 80km, considering Zakynthos measures approximately 40km by 20km, the treasure hunt covered a lot of the island.
We visited parts of the Zakynthos that we hadn’t been to in years, answering questions and collecting items “treasures” along the way. It was a really impressive route that I know had taken a lot of planning by the three doggy (not dodgy!) ladies who organized the event.
Even more impressive was the fact that there was not one fall out in our car, although Catherine was suffering with car sickness for the last 20km, due to the windiness of the roads.
This olive tree is said to be over 2,650 years old.
It’s trunk is an amazing knot of wood and bark.

Four Hours After Starting The Treasure Hunt…
We were back at Zepos, where the scores were totted up by the three doggy (not dodgy!) ladies. The winners took home a proper picnic basket that had been kindly donated.
The day didn’t end there though, once everyone had finished the treasure hunt there was a barbecue and a raffle to look forward to. A lady won the treasure chest cake and shared it around as it was so large, which was nice of her….It broke my heart to watch her cut it, but at least everyone seemed to enjoy it.
The Three Doggy (Not Dodgy!) Ladies Who Organized The Event…
Barbara, Mum and Maureen managed to raise €221 for the stray dogs.
Are constantly working hard to help the stray dogs on Zakynthos all they can and they did themselves proud with the treasure hunt. The money they raised will go to feeding, spaying, vaccinating and paying for medical care for as many stray dogs as possible.
In a few weeks time they will be holding a Christmas party fund raising event and I will happily be donating some more cakes…Best get my thinking cap on!
