I have a very diverse taste in music and like songs because I think they are good and not necessarily because of the artist who sings the song. If you were to check out my music collection you would see a whole range of songs from oldies to more recent songs, from rock songs to soppy songs.
If you were to ask me what type of music is my favourite, I would probably answer that it all depends on my mood and what I am doing at the time. I have songs that I only listen to when working out, I have driving songs that vary between winter and summer and I have songs that move me so much that I avoid listening to them – I admit to being strange at times!
Although if you were to ask me what my all time favourite song is, I would always answer Mr. Bojangles by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Neil Diamond and Robbie Williams have done excellent versions of the song, but for me the original is the best.
Mr. Bojangles is about a man who loved to dance, who still grieved for his dog after twenty years and enjoyed his drink too much. It is a bittersweet song and that never fails to bring a lump to my throat, whilst managing to bring a smile to my face at the same time. Evoking a combination of emotions that I find slightly unsettling. So although it is my favourite song, I don’t listen to it as often as I would probably like – again slightly strange!

Music Is A Powerful Medium…
Music can lift us up when we are down and can bring us down when we are up. It can help make light of heavy work and can make dull activities seem more exciting. Music is behind many a good workout. It is also responsible for many a shed tear, whether they are happy or sad tears, as it brings back memories that may have been long forgotten.
Music is powerful.
My Reason For Writing This Post…
We have recently had a new car radio put in and when I had to take my daughter into town for her computer lesson today, I thought I would plug my music USB stick into the radio and listen to whatever songs came up. I have something like two thousand songs on the USB stick, so I had no idea what songs would play.
The first song played was Lip Up Fatty by Bad Manners, which is a great song to drive to. It’s upbeat, happy and never fails to make me smile. If you don’t know it, you should really check it out below!
Lip Up Fatty by Bad Manners:
The next four songs were all by Barbara Streisand, I had not listened to her songs for along time and had forgotten the amazing power of her voice. The first of her songs that played was Send In The Clowns, followed by Woman In Love and The Way We Were, which she sang with Neil Diamond.
Each song gave me goosebumps, but it was whilst listening to her sing Somewhere that I had to take a sharp, deep breath to stop my eyes from welling up. The intense feeling came out of nowhere and even surprised even me.
It’s not as if the song holds any significant meaning to me, it doesn’t bring back memories, good or bad. It was just the pure power of her voice, coupled with the emotion that she put into the song that made me have to catch my breath. What a gift she has, to be able to move people she has never even met with the power of her voice.

Once again the post I had planned to write today will be put into drafts for another day, as today I wanted to share this story.
How does music affect you? Do certain songs or artists evoke strong emotions in you? Feel free to share your stories in the comments below.
