All Was Not As It Seemed
Last week I shared photos of the dogs lizarding, saying that the lizards were far too fast for them to catch. This week My Sunday Photos are of a lizard that wasn’t quite so fast. Don’t worry they aren’t gruesome!
Lizards have remarkable survival tricks. The one that fascinates me most is that a lizard, having been grabbed, can lose its tail to act as a distraction. Even though the tail is no longer attached to the lizard it will keep twitching and convulsing for quite some time (which is far more fascinating to watch than it sounds). Giving the lizard plenty of time to disappear to safety. It doesn’t take long for the tail to grow back. Obviously the faster the better, for the lizards’ sake!
Another survival trick they have is to play dead. They flip onto their backs and go stiff as if they were dead. It’s a pose they can hold for ages until they feel safe enough to move again. Isn’t nature amazing?
At first, I thought the lizard the dogs managed to get hold of was a goner, which upset me. I am a big softie and hate the thought of anything dying just for the sake of some fun. On closer inspection, I could see that all was not as it seemed and that it was still breathing.
My Sunday Photos
If you look closely you can see that the lizard is in fact still breathing.
Just under the lizards front legs, you can see its rib cage is slightly deflated.
In this photo, just under the front legs, the rib cage has expanded again.
So all was not as it seemed and the lizard was alive, just not kicking yet. Surely this lizard deserves an Oscar?
Quite amazing, don’t you think?
