How To Keep Cool When The Going Gets Hot
Yay, the summer is here!
It’s time to dust off the outdoor furniture and see if those shorts still fit!… I swear that last wash before I put my summer clothes away is a tad too hot (if you know what I mean?). Does anyone else have the same problem?
Wherever you are in the world, the summer usually means warmer weather. You don’t have to be a sun worshipper to enjoy a bit of warmth on your skin. It makes us feel good, but that is probably down to the positive effect of getting outside more, don’t you think? Have you noticed how much happier people are when the sun is shining?
When Things Start To Really Heat Up
The summers here in Greece are long and hot. That’s the way it is. Some years the summer heat is more tolerable than in others. Some summers we are hit by heatwave after heatwave, which you can imagine is HOT in an already hot country!
This summer seems to be one of those extra hot summers. The past few weeks we have been having some tremendous temperatures and the humidity makes it even more uncomfortable to bear, you have to see my hair to know what I mean. Worzel Gummidge eat your heart out! Even my trusty anti-frizz hair treatments aren’t touching the frizz.
Staying cool maybe impossible, but there are ways to stay a touch cooler when the mercury rises.
Five Ways How To Keep Cool
1. Shut Up
That’s not me being rude, that’s me telling you to shut your house up!
I only open up the house first thing in the morning and in the evening. The first thing I do in the morning (after putting the kettle on) is to open up all the windows and doors. Then when I leave for work I shut it all up again. That means shutting out side doors, windows, shutters and even closing the curtains.
It may seem crazy, but trust me it works, the temperature difference is noticeable to the extent that people think we have air con (which we don’t). Oscillating fans are excellent at keeping the air moving too.
2. Cool Blast
Okay, I wasn’t sure what to call this trick, but cool blast seems to fit.
Fill up some large plastic bottles with water and pop into the freezer. Once frozen these can be stood in front of a fan to add a welcome coolness to the moving air.
Due to the house being in semi darkness I set up the cool blast outside for the photo. Which as you can see Buddy loved!
3. ‘Mizzle’ In A Bottle
This is so simple but really effective. When the temperature is really hot and I can’t sleep I grab a spray bottle filled with water and spray it into the air as the fan rotates. The home made ‘mizzle’ is beautifully cooling and can even feel a little too cold!… Bliss!
4. Take A Cool Bath
Who said baths had to be hot? When the mercury rises, why not enjoy a nice cool bath? When the children were small it wasn’t uncommon for all three of us to be squashed together in the bath on a hot afternoon.
5. Stay Out Of The Sun
As daft as it sounds, there is no need to head out into the sun when it’s at its hottest. Try to plan indoor activities for the hottest part of the day. In the summer there is still plenty of outdoor time to be had in the morning or evening, without having to be in out during the hottest part of the day.
