Cliff Climbing At Agalas
Just as our legs had finished recovering from scaling the hills of Kiliomenos, we got ‘sprung’ an even more challenging hike. Last Wednesday the Intrepid Explorers went cliff climbing at Agalas. Okay, okay, so it wasn’t so much sprung on us, we knew what we were in for.
And if the words cliff climbing conjures up images of people swinging on ropes and using crampons, you would have been disappointed and possibly amused to see a handful of middle-aged women, a young man (my son), an older man (Derek, the half man, half mountain goat walk leader) and a huge dog clambering down the cliff side trail.
It was an arduous climb down the steep inclining trail and don’t get me started about the climb back up! Through the burning pain in our legs, we still managed to admire the view and even take a few photos, so it couldn’t have ebeen that bad.
Let me show you what we saw…
;It Was Another Beautiful Day
The road down to the top of the cliffs at Agalas is a steep one, so it was decided that we would meet at the Venetian wells and walk down. I don’t think, at that point, it occurred to us that we would be walking back up the steep road after having tackled the cliffside climb. Oh, the joy!
Spring was definitely in the air.
As usual, I was trailing behind taking photos.
The green hills of Zakynthos.
Don’t be fooled. This road is very steep!
A taste of the views to come.
The west side of Zakynthos is predominantly cliff. Quite spectacular don’t you think?
The Trail Down
The trail down to the plakaki was very rough and ready. You can just about see Derek counting his flock.
My view from the back as usual.
Surprise! There were still a couple of the group behind me!
At last, the plakaki came into view, like an oasis in the desert.
The Plakaki
The plakaki is a flat bed of rock above sea level at the bottom of the cliffs.
Derek, treading where no man has before… Well, it sounds good, so humour me, please?
The view of the cliffs was quite breathtaking. It’s hard to believe we were stood looking at somewhere so naturally beautiful.
Anna striking a pose like there’s nothing to it… Ten points if you can name that song?
The bottom of the cliffs had some interesting looking sea caves. I wonder if anything lives there? Mermen maybe?
All that cliff climbing was hungry work. Time for a spot of lunch.
We live in hope that one day Pumba will learn to carry us up and down the tricky bits. He’s certainly big enough!
And Then We Spotted The Merman
Okay, so technically he’s not a merman, but a girl can dream can’t she?
He was a very friendly merman. He wasn’t waving his fist at us, he was actually offering us a taste of his limpets (behave!).
I love this photo. None of us knew the chap or had seen him before, he was collecting limpets for his dinner and wanted us to try some. He wanted nothing other than to be hospitable, which is how the Greek people always used to be. He must have been chilly, mind.
One last look around before heading back up the cliff trail.
Cliff climbing at Agalas!… Mumble, mumble…
Spot the fishermen.
We had to be very careful on the way back up (like we skipped and bounced our way down?).
Looking back down at where we were. I was not going any closer to that edge than necessary.
Did I mention that spring is here?
With another challenge under their belts, the Intrepid Explorers head back to their cars.
I hope you enjoyed our adventure as much as I enjoyed sharing it. Have you ever gone cliff climbing at Agalas?
