A Break In The Weather
I had hoped to share with you some photos of Marathia this week. But alas the day started off so bad we decided early on that we weren’t going to go, only for it to clear up (typical), not giving us time to get there for the start of the walk. Not to worry, I am sure we will do it again sometime and if we don’t I can always share photographs I’ve taken on previous walks there.
All was not lost though as we took the dogs for a run on the beach and had a nosy round to survey the extent of the flooding. It was bad in places with some roads totally unpassable.
People often imagine sun, sea and sand when thinking of a Greek island. Rarely do rain, storms and flooding come to mind. But these last few days we have had considerable rain and enough flooding to close the schools for a couple of days (fingers crossed they reopen on Wednesday). Bet you didn’t know that happened here? To be honest it doesn’t usually, which adds to the novelty factor.
Joking apart. Homes have been flooded, schools closed, income will have been lost as it’s the main olive picking season and one man on the island lost his life due to the floods. I won’t go into any more detail than that as I don’t know the whole story.
Here are some photos of the dogs enjoying a run on the beach and a few of the flooding taken during a break in the weather. I hope you enjoy them…
Through My Lens #7
”In a pack, I reckon we could take it on!”
“Let’s split up and take it on!”
“We need backup! No one said it was going to be wet!”
A jog down the beach before a game of recall helps to tire them out (husband included!).
It was a very dull mid afternoon.
Time for all to explore.
I wonder if he was thinking about the day he was dumped at the side of the road? Or is just taking in the sights and sounds?
It’s all new to this ten-week-old puppy.
Excuse the ‘stitching’.
I love this photo. It was so grey that the flash went off lighting up the pups, who appear to be deciding where to run next. Zola is now around seven months old and Buddy is only ten weeks old. They have turned into the best of pals… Partners in crime! (Don’t laugh at Buddy’s pretty pink harness. He’ll get a butch one in a few months when he’s nearer his full size).
The sky was a real blue/grey even and it felt much later than early afternoon. We were so glad that the break in the weather gave us the chance to take the dogs for a run on the beach.
Then Off We Went To Explore The Extent Of The Flooding
Whole areas were underwater.
These hens and geese were happy to be high and dry.
Although the geese started making it quite clear they weren’t happy being photographed. Angry geese are best avoided!
Water levels were high.
It’s prime time olive picking season on the island. I hate to think how many livelihoods have been lost due to the weather.
Flooded.
That is someone’s car partially submerged further down the flooded road.
This was our garden the day before the break in the weather. I’m not sure if that much rain is good for my husband’s much-loved grass, that you can just about make out beneath the water!
What’s the weather like where you are?
