It’s Been A Funny Old Week
And I am feeling thankful that it’s coming to an end!
A couple of weeks ago my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. So life has been a bit of a roller coaster recently. One minute he was being diagnosed and the next minute he was scheduled for surgery. The speed at which everything happened can’t be faulted once the elusive cancer was picked up.
We Stayed Positive
It wasn’t easy. Sometimes you can’t help letting a negative thought or two creep in, no matter how hard you try not to. Keeping busy and staying focused on unrelated things has been a great help this week.
I’ve used my blog, walking the dogs and looking for things to photograph as much needed distractions. I’ve chatted to Mum, when I’ve been able to, getting updates of what been going on. All things which have left me feeling thankful and wondering what on earth we did before the invention mobile phones!
The Kindness Of Strangers
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the kindness of strangers too. We had to make Dads predicament public after we were asked to get blood donations for his operation and we were overwhelmed with the response. Total strangers contacted me telling me they had made blood donations in Dads name.
Things Are Looking Good
Dad has come through his operation (which was yesterday), with his sense of humour intact. And his dignity not so – things are done so much differently here in Greece!
I don’t want to count our chickens. Not quite yet. But I can’t help but feeling relieved when the Doctor says he’s pretty sure that the cancer had not spread to surrounding tissue. Dad was scanned, poked and prodded to within an inch of his life, before he was admitted. And everything came back clear. Now we just have to wait for biopsy results and the results from blood they will take in a few weeks time, to know for sure.
I Am Also Feeling Thankful
To the Doctor, who never gave up and followed his gut instinct. When, at first a biopsy came back clear, then a scan and then an MRI. He didn’t accept it. Blood tests indicated something wasn’t right and he kept searching. The cancer was detected on the second biopsy.
It would have been all too easy for him to have sent Dad away, until the usual six months had lapsed between biopsies. But he didn’t.
Speaking To My Sister
Yay! It may not sound like that difficult, but catching my sister for a Skype chat is nigh on impossible. Last week we sat and had a half hour chat. It’s amazing what cancer can do!
The world may not be a perfect place at the moment, but I have a lot to be feeling thankful for. What have you been thankful for recently?
