Official Poop Sleuth
I had intended to call this post ‘It’s Been A Crappy Week’, but on second thoughts I decided that sounded rather negative, because it hasn’t really been a crappy week in a negative sense, it’s been a crappy week in a poop kind of way.
Anyone who regularly reads my blog will know that my two children are long past the age of having ‘little accidents’ and hubby is pretty well trained too. So you may be wondering why I am now an Official Poop Sleuth?
We have four dogs, all of which have had runny poop at some time this week.
Last Sunday I got up to find our German Shepherd (Roxy) had an upset stomach (which really wasn’t a good way to start the day and thankfully it’s the time of year we take up the carpets and scrub them anyway. Oh when I say ‘we’, I mean my husband.). I started her on rice and chicken and kept an eye on her, she’s had liver failure in the past so a change in bowel movements always makes me wary.
Then in the middle of the night my son woke me to say that his dog had bought up her dinner (not only her own judging by the amount!) and was acting funny, so I let her out and she had an upset stomach (it was funny to watch her go from being wild eyed to relieved in a moment).
So the next day I started her on rice and chicken and as both dogs still had runny poop I gave them activated charcoal to help (on the advice of our vet). Which seemed to do the trick.
Then one of our other little dogs (Alphie) started looking a little off colour, and low and behold also came down with a runny tum. And yesterday our final little dog (Rascal) was seen munching on grass like a cow, then passed a decidedly dodgy looking poop.
Why I’ve Had To Be A Poop Sleuth
I’m not too worried about the dogs as none of them appear to be lethargic or very ill. My problem is now monitoring who’s pooping what. With the German Shepherd it’s quite obvious which is hers and she seems to have gone the other way and hasn’t been for a couple of days now.
The problem has been distinguishing which little dog has done what poop, so it has been a case of following the dogs out into the garden when I suspect it’s poop time, which it never turns out to be. And typically as soon as I turn my back, a poop appears.
Today I’m going to start slowly introducing pellets back into the first two dogs that were affected diet, and keep doing my job as a poop sleuth.
We have tried to identify the possible source of the tummy bug, but it has left us puzzled as the first dog to be affected hasn’t been walked for a while due, to her hip dysplasia (she has plenty of room to wander in the garden, and sadly she gets so excited on a walk that it does her legs no good), o it can’t be anything she’s picked up whilst out on a walk. Whatever has caused the problem is from around the garden or inside the house.
The only thing we can think of is that the Hubster (who’s a bit of lawn freak), had some grass runners soaking in water for a few days before he planted them, and I’m wondering if they picked up bacteria from coming into contact with the stagnant water or the grass runners themselves.
Hopefully by this time next week all four dogs are fit and healthy and back on their regular food again!
Have your pets ever fallen ill together? It’s never happened to ours before.
