Maps And Apps
This week I’ve been suffering with what I would call dog-with-a-bone-e-itus. I get like this every now and again (please tell me it’s ‘normal’), sometimes I want to find out or learn about something so badly it takes over, rather like an obsession.
It starts without warning, usually as a harmless thought that slowly grows and before I know it I am sat at the computer, crazy eyed and sweating profusely, whilst my family are baying in the background for food and clean clothes.
Once dog-with-a-bone-e-itus takes hold I can go hours without sustenance, barely breathing and hardly moving, apart from the ferocious tapping of my two index fingers on the keyboard (does anyone really type with more than two fingers, never looking at the keyboard?).
This week my obsession has been uploading our walking group walks from my phone to my laptop (that’s the easy bit) and then transferring the details onto a map (proved to be not so easy, but I cracked it), so that I can save and view the walks on my laptop for future reference.
What I’ve Learned
I’ve learned that maps are mapped out in various different formats, depending on the app used to trace where you’ve been. The app I’ve been using for the past twelve months saves my walks in .KLM format, when what I really want is a .GPX format (the difference being that .GPX saves more indepth details of a walk and .KLM only saves the real basics).
Also .KLM doesn’t seem so compatible with many maps, although I have managed to transfer some of my .KLM saved walks to Google My Maps and can view them on Google Maps too, but I’ve found it to be a bit of a pain.
Now this has left me with a bit of a dilemma with my tracking Apps, as the one I’ve been happily using for a while now that only saves in .KLM, but what I like about it is that it shows a total of walks walked and kilometers walked each month with a grand total of kilometers, meaning that at the end of twelve months (or however long) I can look back and see exactly what walks I’ve done and a grand total of all kilometers walked (it’s the simple things in life that make me happy).
Recently I did download an App, that saves walks in .GPX format, giving a much more detailed account of each walk and it saves each walk on my phone and in OneDrive, so I can look back through them, but without a grand total of walks and kilometers.
I like both Apps, but they won’t run at the same time. Yesterday I started them both, but one over powered the other, so it didn’t collect data. Meaning I have to make a choice, I do prefer the more in depth detail of the .GPX, but that means I have to stop using the one I’ve been using to record all my walks for the past twelve months and I quite like seeing my kilometer totals. On the other hand if I was starting from scratch I would go for the .GPX formatting for sure.
I suppose that means I have just answered my own question.
Do track you workouts? If so, what app do you use?
