How Often Do You Clean Your Makeup Brushes?
Go on, you can tell me. I promise I won’t judge you (to be honest I’m in no position to do so), I’ve only recently been making an asserted effort to clean mine more regularly, but if you don’t clean your makeup brushes very often the chances are they are harbouring some rather nasty bacteria, which your skin will not thank you for.
Makeup brushes that aren’t washed regularly can spread infections or even worse, can be the cause of skin and eye infections. Not a nice thought, but infections are easily avoidable, if you just wash your makeup brushes regularly, ideally every week.
Recently my daughter has started showing an interest in makeup and has started experimenting using my makeup brushes. Sharing makeup brushes isn’t recommended, which is why I’ve started making the effort of washing my brushes every week (or two). And it really doesn’t take long (well, not as long as an infection takes to heal).
How To Clean Makeup Brushes
To wash your makeup brushes all you need is some shampoo (I use Johnsons baby shampoo, but any shampoo will do), a small bowl, some warm water and ten minutes.
- Put a squirt of shampoo into the small bowl and fill with warm water, then pop in your makeup brushes and swish them about in the warm, soapy water for a minute.
- Then put a small amount of shampoo onto the palm of your hand, pick up a brush and work the bristles over your palm, working the shampoo into a lather (the oil in the makeup will prevent much of a lather forming, but they’ll be some suds). You can also work the shampoo into the bristles using your fingertips.
- Then rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary. I’ve found that once is enough now that I’m cleaning my brushes more often.
- Once rinsed, give the brushes a good shake and using a cloth or piece of kitchen roll gently squeeze out any excess water.
- Be sure that the bristles aren’t all over the shop, and lie them on a clean towel or stand them up in glass to dry. If the weather is nice I put mine out in the sun to dry and if not I place them near the fire and they dry over night.
See, that didn’t take long, did it?. Ten minutes tops? Not only are your brushes nice and clean now, but you’ll find that your makeup goes on better when using clean brushes.
If you use sponges to apply your makeup, you can wash them using shampoo. Get your sponge wet and squeeze a small amount of shampoo onto it, and work into a lather.
Now you know how to clean makeup brushes you’ve no excuse for not doing it!
