I Am Not Happy…
Mother cat has moved her babies!
I shared a post about the feral kittens on my photo blog as there were plenty of photos to share, but this post wouldn’t seem right on a photo blog as there is just one sad picture of an empty box.
The Truth Is…
It was a surprise when Lola ( a local feral cat) gave birth in a box which we put out for Morris (the not-so-feral-anymore cat). She is not at all tame and exceedingly wary of people, when we put food out for her she either runs away or hangs right back.
So really I should thank my lucky stars for the four weeks of cuteness we had right on our balcony. And the kittens really were cute.
To Be Honest…
I was surprised that Mother cat kept her kittens there for so long (they will be four weeks old tomorrow), but I’d got used to knowing they were there and seeing them made me soooo happy.
The kittens had just started to be very vocal, with two of them managing to push the flap on the box forward. It wouldn’t have been long until they would have been able to climb out and there is a five foot drop from the top of the cabinet (where the box is) to the floor on one side. So I can fully understand why she has taken them.
But that doesn’t make me feel any less sad. As Morris, the-not-so-feral-anymore cat hasn’t been seen for over four weeks, I am not expecting to see him again, so we were hoping to be able to give two of the kittens a home and find homes for the other two. Now unless Mother cat keeps coming back for food and they follow her when they are old enough, that won’t happen.
We would like a couple of cats hanging out round the wood piles to keep the mouse population in check. but we will wait for a while to see if there is any sign of them nearby. If not we will look into taking on a couple of other homeless cats for the job.
Do feral cats move their young very far or is there a chance they’ll be back?
