First School Trip…
This morning, at some ridiculously early hour, long before the sun started to rise, I dropped my daughter off at her school for her first school trip away.
Every year there is a school trip to the mainland for a few days, but this is the first year she has wanted to go. When she first mentioned that she’d like to go, I was pleased as it’s something we have always said she could do if she wanted to, but she’s never shown any interest before now.
On the trip they’ll be spending three days in Athens, visiting places of interest and undoubtedly having very little sleep. Catherine was horrified when she saw on the trip schedule that they would be going out to eat at nine o’clock in the evening; it’s not unusual for Greeks to eat late in the evening, it’s just that’s it’s not something we tend to do. And they still had to be up at seven for breakfast; my daughter has never been a morning person and I pity the person that has to try to wake her up….It could get bloody!
My daughter is (on the whole) very laid back and seems to take everything in her stride. I left her to do her own packing, which she left to the last minute only doing it last night….Okay, I admit to telling her it is always wise to take more underwear than needed (you never know, accidents can happen) and some plastic bags for dirty clothes and shoes, but if she’s forgotten anything it was her own doing and she can’t blame me….I’m sure she’ll survive if she has.
She is 15, so I’m not worried about her going away on a school trip, especially she’s as sensible as I could wish a 15 year old to be and she is no follower of the pack. She has a tendency to always have her nose in a book, but has promised to take it out long enough to enjoy herself and interact with her school mates.
The house has felt odd without her around today and her little dog is looking a slightly lost too, but I hope her getting her first real taste of independence, away from the family, gives her a thirst for more. I want her to want to explore what the world has to offer, to take in different cultures and to learn to appreciate things that may not be entirely to her taste.
On Tuesday I look forward to hearing what she has to say about her trip and it will be interesting to see if this first short trip away changes her outlook on anything….And she better bring my camera back in one piece!
How was your child’s first school trip away? Did they have a great time or were they put off going away again anytime soon?
