Peculiar is the word I am choosing as my Word Of The Week, as we are in mid summer and the weather has been most peculiar.
I am still very English…
The fact that I have chosen that word to describe the weather probably stems from still being very English although I left England a long time ago.
In all my years living in Greece I don’t think I can remember such strange weather; it rained three times in the past week and not just little drops, we are talking about cloud bursts that left huge puddles and thunder loud enough to rattle windows.
Why the weather is peculiar…
The day and night temperatures are below average for this time of year, which is great because sleeping isn’t a problem; we don’t have air conditioning. But the sea is still cold; I don’t ‘do’ cold sea, so have only swum four times so far.
The peculiar weather is great for farmers too…
Hopefully the unseasonal rain will mean that our oranges will be big and juicy this winter, we can only water the trees so much from the mains. And fingers crossed that the olive crops are better for it too. Last winter the olive harvest was not as good as usual…We don’t have olive trees, but live in an area surrounded by olive groves and grape vines.
A sign that I have lived in Greece for too long…
The peculiar weather has made me question my son sleeping outside on the balcony as I worry he’ll get cold, which is madness as the thermometer outside is still registering over 20C when I get up at six o’clock. The weather has not been cold, just cooler than normal and odd.
Maybe the rather peculiar weather is actually a blessing disguise…
I am sure that by September we will be glad that the summer hasn’t been as hot as usual, as July and Augusts temperatures can be uncomfortable during the day with little reprieve at night.
After the storms of the last week…
The weather will probably improve and we will be hit with a heatwave that will last for weeks, with temperatures being unusually hot, even for August. And if that happens you can probably guess my Word Of The Week for next week!
Has anything peculiar happened to you in the past week? Feel free to share it in the comments below.
