It’s been a few weeks since I wrote my first Ten Things Of Thankful post, so I thought it’s about time to take another good look at what’s been going on in my life and acknowledge ten things that I am thankful for right now. So here goes:
Ten Things That I Am Thankful For…
#1 and #2. I have been thankful for the Easter break. In the few weeks leading up to Easter we had a lot going on, my head was spinning, things were happening too fast to take in properly – our son has always been ‘different’ and we are finally getting the answers that we have wanted for so long, he is seventeen now and has confused many a Doctor until now, but finally we are being listened too! So this break has given me time to think, digest and to recharge my batteries. Next week when the cogs start grinding again, I hope to be fresh and alert.
#3. I am thankful that I am a patient person with the ability to count backwards. Counting down from 10-1 slowly, helps me to focus on what is important, so I can handle the often stressful situation at hand.
#4. I am thankful that this year I have actually subscribed to be able to watch the ITU Triathlon World Series live and on demand. I love watching and following the Triathlon World Series, but the races aren’t always televised, so previous years I have had to make do with highlights, which isn’t quite the same. The subscription fee for one year is only 19€ and for that I can watch the races live or at a time that suits me, I can also see pre and post race interviews with the athletes. It’s my little bit of ‘me’ time.
At four o’clock this afternoon you will find me plonked in front of a screen watching the mens race live, it’s being held in Cape Town, South Africa, so maybe my husband will give me the pleasure of his company too. He’s from South Africa and loves anything South African!
#5. I am thankful that we never got rid of our elliptical trainer, which is something I never thought I would say. I love running and cycling, but working out on a stationary machine really doesn’t do it for me. For my Birthday and Christmas last year my family got me a Total Gym, but as we are short on space there was a big conflab on whether or not we should sell the elliptical trainer and we very nearly did. My argument for keeping it was that we may not enjoy using it, but in times of injury we can get a good low impact workout on the thing… And last week I pulled a calf muscle chasing the dog, so I’ve been using it to maintain fitness. When you get over a certain age, not running for even just a few days makes it hard when you hit the pavements again – Or is that just me?
#6. I am thankful for friends who really know me.
#7. I am thankful that the children are back to school tomorrow! It’s nice having them home, but it’s nice when they go back to school. Although they finish for exams in about three weeks time and will then break up for the long summer holidays in mid June. Trying not to think that far ahead!
#8. I am thankful for having discovered nasal irrigation for my son. He suffers terribly from hay fever and is unable to blow his nose. Using a special nasal syringe has helped to keep his symptoms to a minimum without having to use medical nose sprays – he still takes tablets, but it’s an improvement.
#9. It may sound silly, but I am really thankful for my multi tiered steamer pan. We love beetroot, but cooking and preparing it can be a messy process. I have found that if I steam it and leave it to cool I can remove the skin with a couple of pieces of kitchen roll with minimum mess. My fingers get a little pink, which washes off easily, but I my arms and the kitchen counter are not stained with purple beetroot ‘blood’. I steam them whole in their skins, with just an inch or so of stalk.
#10. I am thankful that I have not had to see or speak to a vet for what seems like a lifetime. Over the past year our dogs have each had their fair share of veterinary attention, the little dogs were spayed and neutered.
Our German Shepherd nearly had to be put down with liver failure last September, but with a lot of counting from 10-1 backwards, hand feeding her home cooked food and plenty of TLC, she has recovered. She has never looked so good. She will have a liver functioning test in a few weeks to confirm how well her liver is working, but I have a feeling that all will be well.
Our old dog, Beanie’s, heart started to show signs of failure a couple of months back. After one wobbly patch where things didn’t look good for her, her medication seems to be working now. She still enjoys her walks, although they are shorter now and her appetite is back to what it was.
At the start of this post I wasn’t sure exactly what I as going to write, I had ideas, but didn’t think they would cover much screen. Isn’t it funny that when we sit down and focus, how the words just flow. My family think I suffer with verbal diarrhea and I think they may just have a point!
#11. I am always thankful when someone reads a post I have written. So thank you for taking the time to read my post.
